'Henry Toye Home for the Fatherless' Help Please
« on: Wednesday 08 July 09 19:40 UTC (UK) »

Hi All

Does anyone have any information of the above insitution? The children who went there are not always' fatherless' but from homes where they could not afford to keep them. It was in Lewisham. There is a website but it's not really working.

I have a person who went there in 1901. She was one of 3 sister's & was born in South Africa (Capetown). She was called Harriet Swain & was born in 1888. There is a note next to her place of birth 'C.C' & a tick. Any ideas what that meant?

The story is that she was adopted by a jewish lady & no more is known about her.

Any info on the home or the notation on the census would be great.

Regards Suzanne

I think the tick has been added by the enumerator to help him count up those persons not born in London and C.C. would stand for Cape Colony http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Cape_Colony_from_1806_to_1870  Here's a picture of the home, which was destroyed in WW2 http://picasaweb.google.com.au/michael.andre.phillips/Family_tree#5135459377215105122

Some information here:

Perhaps ask Lewisham archives if they know where/if any records are kept?

Hi

It doesn't look from this message on an Ancestry board that either Lewisham local studies or the LMA know where the records are for this establishemnt or if any have in fact survived.

http://boards.ancestry.com.au/topics.orphans.uk.england/32.1/mb.ashx

However the message states though it was in Lewisham Road it was in Greenwich so it maybe worth checking with Greenwich Archives as well.

Hi

Thanks to all. I would still like to know what the c.c stood for.

Regards Suzanne

C.C. stood for Cape Colony - as Ermy said at reply #1 above.
