Rose ( my grandmother) was born in Suffolk approx. 1886 and she died in 1940 Edmonton, Alberta Can. I am looking for her correct BD, immigration info to Canada and any family information that may be available? Anything at all would be helpful.

Hi and welcome to rootschat.
You should be able to get the quarter of the exact year she was born by searching in freebmd online. You could then buy her birth cert for 7GBP- ordering it online also if you wished. This would give her excat date of birth, place and names of her parents etc. Do you know approx when she emigrated? Did she marry and if so was it in England?

Hi,
I don't see Rose born in Suffolk but there is one born in the district of Downham which spans the Camebridgeshire/Norfolk border.
Rose Thrower (Dec. quarter, 1886, Downham, vol 4b, page 360)
Could she be the one?

Thanks Charlotte, I'm new at this so do I just google the freebmd site......? I'm uncertain if she was married when she left England or not .-my father thought his oldest brother was a half brother so it is possible there was another marriage..........she married my grandfather (Roy Smith)..... again not sure where......if it was in the United States or in Canada. He was born in New Mexico so we do not know if they immigrated from the USA together or if they met in Canada and married here or not and we have no info on him either. Roy and Rose died within weeks of each other when their children were young teenagers so details are real sketchy.

I'm thinking that 1886 BD would be correct and this is probably her.......her death certificate lists her as being 53 years old when she died......Aug. 7, 1940

Hi again, Sorry I didn't give you the url... you can find it by googling but here it is
http://www.freebmd.org.uk
Looks as if Genie has found your girl
As Roy Smith was born New Mexico the marriage to him was probably in USA or Canada. If I were you I'd check out marriages in freebmd so that you know whether or not there is an obvious marriage for Rose in England as you have a suggestion that the marriage to Roy Smith may have been Rose's second marriage. There are border crossing records- US to Canada is what would be relevant here but you need to know her surname for that so perhaps that's bit down the track. There's a lot to check on here but do it step by step- try to establisg what you can about her in England then move from that to US/Canada... don't be overwhelmed
When you've checked out marriages on freebmd get back to us if you wish.

Morning All
I got lucky:

Has Rose Thrower aged 20 on board the ship Lake Manitoba arriving in Quebec 9 May 1907. With loads of other Throwers on a variety of other ships.

Thanks Charlotte
It would useful to look at the 1901 census and see if the Thrower's on the passenger lists tie and we might hopefully get some corroberation with the bmds as well. I am off to sea shortly so won't be able to do too much more.

The 1901 census has:
Rose Thrower 14 Suffolk Wrentham Suffolk Wrentham General Servant Domestic
James Thrower 7 Suffolk Wrentham Suffolk Wrentham Juvenile
This ties in with the 2 passengers travelling together on the Manitoba

I wonder if Rose was travelling on an "assisted passage" scheme, given her occupation had been as a dom serv.?
