Atkinson/Sanders info complete
« on: Saturday 11 July 09 10:25 UTC (UK) »

I'm looking for any information on John Atkinson who married Elizabeth Sanders. Thy immigrated to Canada with their children between 1885 and 1890. One of Elizabeth's sisters married T.D. Taylor of the Cumberland area (I think). I tink elizabeth's father was Robert Sanders. Any info would be appreciated or even some guidance on how to research.
Thanks

Lisa

Hi, Lisa,

The FreeBMD site shows a marriage between John Atkinson and Elizabeth Sander - 1867 Q3, Penrith,  Vol. 10b,   Page 487

Any good?

'Hat.

Have you got them on the 1881 census? You can search it free at www.familysearch.org. They have 3 children on this census

Are you going forward or backwards? From the info  supplied by 'Hat you can request the marriage cert and get both parties father and his occupation (unless he's dead of course). That will then send you on another wonderful voyage of discovery for the previous generation - still searchable on freebmd.org.uk.
Good luck

Thanks for the direction. So far I have found out that Elizabeth Sander was born in Carlisle and her father was Robert and her mother was Sarah Liddle. Robert's mother was Elizabeth sterett(spelling ?) and his father was Robert. See the problem? All the dang Elizabeths and Roberts make it confusing. Robert Sander Sr.'s father and mother were Thomas and Jane Sander, married in 1774 (?)

John Atkinson's father was George who was the son of Edward Atkinson (1770).

I'm working backwards by the way.

Can anyone tell me what is the best online site to search for records as far back as 1770?

Thanks.

Lisa, it will all depend on whether you're happy to pay or not. Being so close to scotland, some of us are half scottish so we much prefer the free ones but you should also keep your eye open for free introductory offers. Back to 1837 try www.freebmd.org.uk then try www.familysearch.org but be careful and always check if you can. Or if in doubt ask on this forum.
