I'm new to this - my first posting - so please excuse me if I'm on the wrong page....  I came across you because I am researching the name BUBB in Bucks. It looks as if  you are too. How can we 'chat' about this without inconveniencing people looking for lookups in Huntingdonshire....? Your, hopefully, MLS, in Sydney.

Hi MLS
Welcome to rootschat  Grin

To speak to Moors using the PM (Private Message) you will have to do two more posts on here, so reply to this, then one more and you will be ready to go!

Rosie.

Hi Moors,

Members of the Australian family I am researching were boarded with 'the Miss Bubbs' between 1884 and 1889. An account of that time states:

'When my father left his regiment and became a Staff major on better pay he was ordered to Egypt to the Relief of Gordon campaign. Mother took us then to England to a country house kept by the Miss Bubbs. She sent for Loubie. Loubie packed, roped and addressed her tin box, then sat on it on the wharf in Dublin. They put her on the channel ferry and off at Liverpool. There she sat on her box till they put her on the train and that's how she reached Buckinghamshire. Mother then left the three little ones with her and took Bob and me to a relative in Edinburgh. Mother was going to follow my father to Egypt of be damned to it. She jumped her fences whatever else she did. One of her obstacles was that when she returned to the Bubbs, Loubie packed her box and returned to Ireland as she had come. Mother hopped this fence by leaving the babies in charge of the Bubbs.'

Young Jack, who was just three when left here, became 'very difficult'. ' the Miss Bubbs tied him under the yard pump and drenched him with icy cold water when he was naughty.'

All sounds a bit Dickensian, doesn't it!  What I am trying to find out is - who were these Bubbs? I can't believe that they were total strangers to this family. The older children were left with a relative, so surely there would have been some connection with the Buckinghamshire Bubbs....  Or did they just see an ad in the paper?!

If you know of any maiden Aunts in that vicinity (or elsewhere, as the Bucks reference could I suppose be misremembered ) who took in children, then I would be very pleased to hear about it.

Many thanks,
MLS

Hello MLS, There is no connection to my Bubb surname as the family I have did not have any son's only daughters and they were (M) by 1884/9 Mary (M) 1841 to Thomas Hart the other one Anne (M) 1861 to Thomas Mc Quhae. she was a teacher then governess on the 1861 cenus RG9/880/20/10 and 1871 RG/10/1301 1881 RG/11/1324/14/5 in 1881 Annie was 51yrs. living in Clewer Berkshire.
My Gt. Grandfather was also in Egypt in 1884/5 where he died July 1885. I have not been able to find his army records at Kew, but did find a book about the period with his name in.  Sorry I cannot help you more.
