The Mayflower brought the first colonists to what is now Plymouth, Massachusetts in the winter of 1620/21.  This was the first colonialsettlement to survive.  There had been a previous less successful colony at Jamestown, Virginia founded in 1607.

Edited:  and I should have said that there had been earlier efforts that failed entirely - notably Roanoke, which disappeared.

Silly me, of course I knew about the Mayflower.
So it could have been quite normal to emigrate in the late 1600 early 1700s?

Just as a point of historical fact, Jamestown was the first successful settlement, not Plymouth.  This is attested to by the several thousands of living descendants of settlers who came to Jamestown before the Pilgrims landed in Massachusetts.

There are even some good records from before 1619 that name individuals coming to Jamestown, taxation records, etc.  As you get into the later 1600s you can often find indenture documents and grants of land to people who paid for the passage of individuals to come to America from England and Europe.
