Completed‘. Norton Users’ advice please.
« on: Sunday 12 July 09 07:34 UTC (UK) »

‘ Norton Users’ advice please.

I have Norton Internet Security  2008 installed on my PC by a friend last July.

The annual subscription runs out in about 14 days from now so I have purchased  Norton Internet Security 2009 ready to install when the time comes.

Unfortunately, the friend who installed it for me last year has moved away and so I will have to try & install it myself.
The bit I'm unsure about is:

Do I need to completely uninstall Norton 2008 before I try to install Norton 2009?

Or will installing the 2009 version automatically update and overide the 2008 version?

I don't really understand all this so I'd appreciate any advice from other Norton users.

I have a Packard Bell BV Desktop PC,
Intel® Pentium R D CPU 2. 2.80 GHz. Speed 2793 MHz
Operating System  is Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition. (SP3).

Cheers

Barbara.

Hi Barbara

I have Norton on two of my machines*. In my experience, there should be no problems. I've not had to uninstall.

However, when I've updated, it has been via the little popup that tells you that it is due to expire. I've always waited until about a day before the old licence expired and then purchased via a download. Everything has then been done automatically.

* they are due to expire in 6 months or so and I will then be switching  to McAfee which comes free with BT Option 3

Hello again Gadget,

Thanks for your reply.

Yes, I got the little pop-up window last year prior to Norton 2007 running out, telling me to purchase & download the update.

I wish I could have done the update that way but unfortunately, when I tried to download the update,  my IP (aol) said that the file was too large to download which is how I came to buy and install  Norton 2008 last year and have now purchased Norton 2009.

Oh dear

Hi again,

Just wondered if anyone out there might be able to help with the following please:

Do I need to completely uninstall Norton 2008 before I try to install Norton 2009?

Or will installing the 2009 version automatically update and override the 2008 version?

Any advice would be welcome.

Thanks

Barbara.

If you have 2008 and want to install 2009 just bung the CD in and follow the instructions, 2009 will unintall 2008 automatically as part of the install process.

Hi Ron,

Thanks very much for that info, it's all I needed to know.

Norton 2008 runs out in 17 days time so I've got that long to pluck up the courage to do it !!

Wish I'd been brought up in the computer age and didn't view any necessary software installations with such trepidation.

Never mind, I'm getting there slowly.

Thanks again

Hi Barbara.

I have also upgraded to the Norton 2009 Internet security.

If you have any problems Symantec are very helpful at sorting it out for you, after you have installed it if you have any hiccups!

I have found them to be extremely helpful and the new system is faster than the old version and very good!

If you buy the download make a backup disc to be on the safe side!

Hi Rabbit,

Well, I can certainly speak from experience with regard to Symantec help.

I had a nightmare installing it, for various reasons. In the end I had to go to Norton help and they  installed it for me - I have to say that they were great.

It worked fine for about 10 days, then yesterday back came a problem that I just couldn't fix, even after following the Norton on-line instructions for the error I kept getting.

At 07.00 am today, I contacted their help line for 'Chat' help and I had to wait about 50 mins for a Representative to become free.

End result was Symantec taking over again and after quite a lot of work etc, they solved the problem.

So although I have had  a lot of trouble getting Norton 2009 off the ground, I cannot fault their help & support. It was spot on.

Cheers

Hi Barbara,

I gave them 10/10 for their service, I wrote to them and they did it all for me too!

I think that they are a brilliant Company.  They really know the meaning of customer service!

 Hi Rabbit,

And there was I beginning to think that 'Customer Service' in general had become a distant memory.

It's a comfort to know that it still exists in various places/companies.

Good for Norton.
