COMPLETED Stocker 1851 or 1861 for birthplace
« on: Sunday 12 July 09 14:00 UTC (UK) »

Hello,
Not sure if I am on a wild goose chase. I have a William Stocker b abt 1820 and Ellen Wakefield bap 1820 marriage in 1842 Bradfield reg Dist. (probably Mortimer)
I know from the 1881 that Ellen came from Beedon and she had a dau Jemima abt 1861.
What I need to know is where were William and Ellen in 1851 - not in Berkshire - or in 1861, as that ought to tell me where William was born.   Berks or Hants or somewhere else entirely.

I had thought that  he may be the William son of Charles and Charlotte nee Fassett bap in Thatcham, but that one must be the one buried as an infant in 1821.

Yours

Surname looks a bit like STORKER on the image but I think is is STOCKER :-
1861: Windmill Com. - Stratfield Mortimer
RG9 /  Piece: 743 /  Folio: 63 /  Page: 25 /
Head: William STOCKER 43, Ag Lab, b Beadon Berks *
Wife: Ellen STOCKER 42, b Mortimer
Son: William STOCKER 6, b Mortimer
Dau: Sarah Ann STOCKER 5, b Mortimer
(enumerated next to old Daniel CLEMENTS (82) )

* The birth places of William and Ellen look to have been transposed, possibly by the enumerator when copying into his book.

BIRTH - Jemima STOCKER - Mar Qtr 1862 Bradfield

DEATHS in Bradfield district Berkshire (under which comes Mortimer):-
Their daughter Ellen may be the DEATH in Bradfield Sep Qtr 1851.
There is also a death of a William STOCKER in 1852 and a Lucy STOCKER in 1860 - which are likely his parents.
There is a John STOCKER death in Jun Qtr  1851 which may be a son, or may be William's younger brother who was 17 in 1841.
There are deaths of a James and a George STOCKER in 1853 and 1855 respectively, which may be sons.
There is the death in 1865 of William STOCKER  - which is probably him seeing as Ellen is a widow in 1871...

1871: Common - Stratfield Mortimer, Berkshire
RG10 /  Piece: 1276 /  Folio: 117 / Page: 31
Head; Ellen STOCKER 50, Head, Widow, Marr, Laundress, b Beedon  **
Son: William STOCKER 17, unm, b Mortimer [Blind]
Dau: Sarah STOCKER 15, unm, b Mortimer
Dau: Jemima STOCKER 9 , Scholar, b Mortimer
Lodger: James CLEMENTS 40, unm, Labourer, b Mortimer

** In Relationship column, enumerator has written Head, then crossed it out and written Widow underneath. But he has Left M for married in the Marital Status column.

Hello Ambly,
Thank you for that. This is the right person. I said "not in Berkshire" because I could not find them on the Berks FHS 1851 transcription index. I now see that they were transcribed as STOKER. As Mortimer is close to the Hampshire border (West End Mortimer is in Hampshire) I did wonder if they were in that County.

Thanks for your help. That has solved a lot of problems.
Regards

Loose end....

Daughter: Mary Ann in 1861 - this looks like be her tho' age is a bit out as she should be 18 (only 1 Mary A STOCKER registered in Bradfield 1841-1851, in  Sep Qtr 1842)

1861:  Wokefield Green - Wokefield, Berkshire
RG9 /  Piece: 743 /  Folio: 71 /  Page: 2
Servant: Mary A STOCKER 15, b Mortimer Berks
In Household of Michael BLUNDEN 67,  Carpenter and his wife Ann 61 and sister Hannah 71.

You're welcome! Nice to see you now have another generation back.
I cheerfully admit to not having a clue that Berkshire borders Hampshire let alone Mortimer is in both  Tongue  Grin   so ta, I will file that away in my box of 'things' learned - may come in handy another time.
