COMPLETED 1841 Bristol census
« on: Sunday 12 July 09 16:33 UTC (UK) »

Please can anyone find details of William Chick in Bristol on 1841 census?  He would be aged around 20/21 then. It would be very helpful if he was with his parents.

In 1851 he was a confectioner in Bedminster aged 30/31 (can't quite read it).  He said he was born Clifton, but I can't find a baptism.  In 1851 he was married to a lady called Mary, aged 26 and had children aged 6 upwards.  I am trying to find a connection with another Chick who is a brick wall.  On FREEBMD I can only see a marriage in 1843 of a William Cheek to Mary Ann Andrews.

I would appreciate any help.

Hello  Smiley

There seems to be only one William Chick age 20-ish  -  living Bristol St James  -  in the house hold of a William McIntosh, labourer.

William Chick and 4 others in the household have Army as their occupation  Undecided

Well,  it says Yes in the born in county column,  but the county is Gloucestershire   Undecided

The Bedminster part of Bristol was in Somerset back then, but I think the most of the city was Gloucestershire   Undecided

You are right the image does say born in county, the transcription from findmypast does show birthplace Somerset

How odd   Smiley    So it does   Undecided

Perhaps someone will know whether St James was -  in those days  -  in the Somerset or Gloucester part of the city of Bristol    Undecided

It clearly says Gloucestershire on the image, and FMP have also put Gloucester in their transcription of the address  Sad  so I wonder why they put Somerset as place of birth   Huh

St James was central Bristol so should not be under Somerset.  It all gets more confusing.  I did wonder if he was another one from Somerset.

Thank you for your help.

On the Enumerator's Schedule for St James District 9, "County of Gloucestershire" has been crossed through and replaced by "County of Somerset". So even in those days there was some doubt!!

So, Ivan  -  maybe the people who have been recorded as born Somerset also thought St James was in Gloucester  -   so they said born on County, whereas they should have said not   Huh

Hi Mum44

I suspect that you are correct.

I have found in the past that certain places which are supposed to be in Gloucestershire have been recorded as being in Somerset and vice versa. Probably something to do with boundary changes over time.

Poor old Bristol has been messed around quite a lot over the years: Gloucestershire, Somerset, Avon and now no county at all (apparently it's in the county of Bristol)!

No wonder I've had so much trouble tracing people, if they confused the counties.  St James is only a couple of minutes walk from the original Bristol city.
Bristol was a city and county for over 600 years before they brought in Avon.  I always refused to acknowledge it, a one woman protest.  People also pronounced it as AV-ON, like the cosmetics when the river is pronounced as AV-UN.

I think my ancestors were deliberately unhelpful.

Thank you all for looking up the records.
