Looking for information beyond the Old Parish Records for information on Samuel Donaldson, merchant, born 1729 who married Anne Howieson in Leith. Their youngest son Robert 1769, a sailor married Janet Willison/Wilson. Their son also Robert born 1801 moved to South Shields and appears as a mariner in all the census returns.
Any information e.g. source of records much appreciated
You might like to know that Samuel Donaldson was listed in Williamson's Edinburgh Directory for 1773 (the earliest Edinburgh Directory). His address is shown as "The Shore, Leith" and his occupation as Grocer. The Shore is the street that runs alongside the harbour of Leith (i.e on the river - there were no docks then) and he probably did a lot of trade with seafarers.
The IGI (www.familyseach.org) has extractedbirth/christening entries for 7 children to this couple, all in South Leith. David 1760 John 1761 Anne 1762 Marion 1764 Samuel 1766 Thomas 1768 Mary 1772
Also their marriage in April of 1759 South Leith.
Strangely no sign of any Roberts
Sauel does not appear in the list of Apprentices or Burgesses and Guild members for Edinburgh, but Leith was a separate Burgh so you may have to search archives for any remaining lists for Leith. Edinburgh Council hold many of the originals, and the Central Library on George IV Bridge has the largest collection of papers relating to the Edinburgh Area in the world. they also hold old post office directories and trade directoies, broadsheets and many other publications.
Many thanks, Kirsty. I had the births from the Old Parish Records, but your pointers to other sources of information are very helpful and I will look to follow these up. Susan.
