lukers = Westbury on Trim/Horfield
« on: Sunday 12 July 09 20:14 UTC (UK) »

I have been researching the Luker family for several years. The name isn't very common which means that there aren't a large number of people in the same area of research as me.
I have been looking for the parents and siblings of Charles Luker for some time. He died in Dorset in 1841 and his death certificate gives his age as 60 so I am looking for a birth around 1781.On the 1841 census it is shown that he wassn't born in Dorset.
In 1804, a few months before he married in Corfe Castle, Dorset I have also found a marriage with witnesses Charles and Thomas Luker. I can't find any other enteries, either marriage or death for Thomas so I can only imagine that he probably moved out of area.
Just recently I was contacted by another Luker researcher whose family are from the Westbury on Trim / Horfield area of Gloucester. He has parents John and Rachel Luker with children Thomas 1779, John 1780, Mark 1786, James 1788, Sarah 1796 and Ann 1799.
As you can see there is a gap where Charles could be between John and Mark and giving him a brother Thomas.
The information found so far has been from 'familysearch'. My usual source of the 'Hugh Wallis' files isn't able to help me on this occasion so I am wondering if there is anyone in the county who can lead me to a site that might help?
Of course I may be grabing at straws but I have been up against a brick wall for ages for finding family for Charles for a long time!
I would expect that John and Rachel must have been married somewhere in the area around 1778. I don't know Rachel's maiden name which might help.
Please can anyone help?Huh

Presume you have seen this on IGI:

Charles LUKER ch  29 Dec 1785  Faringdon Berks, s of John + Elizabeth

see P018651   admittedly they are submitted, but there appear to be quite a few Luker listed.  Maybe a post to the Berkshire Board?

1804 was during the Napolenic War - was Charles a soldier/sailor?  Hence marriage at Corfe Castle, and potentially a fair amount of moving around......

Both IGI:

A Thomas Lucker m Mary LUKE  by Lic  Falmouth Cornwall 1807

A Thomas Lucker ch Kingston Bagpuis Berks  1790 son John + Mary

I take it you have tried all the varying spellings:

Lucker, Loker, Locker, Locur, Lucar, etc

Thank you for starting the ball rolling.

Charles Luker in Farringdon is definitely not the Charles I am looking for, I've tracked his line in the hopes of finding a link, without any luck so far, so I'd given up on the Berkshire Lukers and was hoping to find something from the Gloucester ones.

My Charles is recorded as a labourer at all the christenings ,which appear in 4 different parishes around Corfe Castle ,so I imagine that is exactly what he was, as he moved around a bit presumably after work.

Does anyone have transcripts of Horfield or Westbury on Trim christenings?

Snip.

Does anyone have transcripts of Horfield or Westbury on Trim christenings?

According to the LDS library catalogue the six films of Horfield's  churches'  records cover quite a few places including PR's and BT's of the parish church.  No data has been extracted from the films so your best bet is to search them at your nearest LDS church FHC.

Similarly the W-O-T LDS films of the parish records have not had their data extracted either so there's another search you need to do.

The above is why the H.W. site cannot help you.   You might find http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/FindingBatchNos.html useful

I am now able to add a bit more information to the picture.

John married Rachael WHITE in Horfield on 5/10/1778

The wedding that Thomas and Charles were witnesses at  in Corfe Castle 1804 was to a George Day and Margaret WHITE

Charles married Sarah WHITE

There is a baptism entry for a Rachel WHITE in Corfe Castle on 30/01/1757
Rachel, Margaret and Sarah all have different parents whose fathers don't appear to be siblings. Is this a coincidence or something in it?

Has anyone any ideas please?

The John X Rachael marriage details you obtained from the IGI is neither submitted nor extracted nor has it any source details whatsoever so you would be advised not to accept it without verification via an LDS film of church records as I said before..

A CD was obtained with the details from the Bristol and Avon History Society so I am hoping the information is a correct transcription. I hope you are not going to say that these can not be relied upon!

Had you said where the info came from I would not have posted anything.

This highlights the need for giving the source of any information quoted so as to tell others where and what not to bother checking.
