Hi Andrew

You have an ancestor, whose  death and/or mariage record, names William SUNTER and Elizabeth CHRISTIE as the parents?

yes, I have a marriage record for Robert Sunter and Janet Peddie (married in Dundee) from 1864 which names William and Elizabeth as the parents of Robert. then i have a parish record from 1822 from Kirkcaldy about William and Elizabeths marriage.

Was Robert a shoemaker b abt 1840?

Son: Robert SUNTER 11, Scholar, b Abbotshall Fife
Lodger: Hugh SINCLAIR 41, Roper,  b Perth, Perthshire
(original census s/be checked to see if Elizabeth snr is listed as Married or widowed)

DEATH: 1860 Abbotshall Fife
Elizabeth SUNTER other name CHRISTIE
Age is not indexed but may be shown in the actual document

1861: High Street, Abbotshall,
Parish 442, Ed 29, pg 8
Head: William SUNTER 61, Seaman, b Kirkcaldy
Dau: Elizabeth SUNTER 24, Flax Mill Worker,  b Abbotshall

Daughter: Jane PHILP 17, Linen Factory Worker, b Dysart

1881: 4 Reids court, Abbotshall Kirkcaldy

If this looks right, it would appear both William and Elizabeth died after 1855 - in which case their death certtificates should hopefully name their respective parents, getting you back another generation.

Cheers

There's a William died in 1878 in Earlsferry who I think is the right one. his parents were David Sunter and Margaret Andrew. confusingly though, for a family so east coat based, they were married in Paisley in 1785. I've also seen William Sunter's father called John (in the parish record of the marriage). Undecided

the marriage notice for them is so blurred as to be virtually unreadable (on Scotland's People anyway) so i cant gather anymore info from that. so there i'm stuck.

I'm also trying to tie up my family with an Andrew Sunter who died in WW1. he is named on a war memorial in Elie as Andrew B (for Bowie) Sunter but that is thought to be wrong as Andrew Bowie Sunter lived to 75 and died in 1956 in Edinburgh.

Andrew Alexander Sunter
Born March 21 1884
The parents and nine children were at Bassview, Liberty, Kilconquhar in the 1891 census

Died on 24th June 1916. Age 33.
Born at Elie, Fife, and enlisted at Winnipeg, Canada.
Andrew Alexander Sunter married Isabella Jane Wilson 1907 in Montrose. They lived at 53 King Street, Montrose

From his war record.
Andrew B Sunter

Rank: Private

Service Number: 460920

Regiment/Service: Canadian Infantry (Manitoba Regiment)

Andrew Alexander’s parents were Christopher M Sunter and Robina Thomson. Christopher’s parents were David Sunter and Anne Bowie

Andrew Bowie was born on 3 December 1880 in Leith. His parents were Alexander Sunter and Elizabeth Cumming. Alexander’s parents (so Andrew Bowie’s grandparents) were David Sunter and Anne Bowie.

Therefore: the 2 Andrew’s are cousins. Andrew Bowie Sunter died in 1956 in George Square, Edinburgh at the age of 75

Andrew Alexander Sunter is the bloke who left for Canada but somewhere along the line became known as Andrew Bowie Sunter. WHY?
