Visiting my Ancestor's Worcestershire home
« on: Monday 13 July 09 19:16 UTC (UK) »

Hi Folks,

Visiting the old ancestral homes of my great grandmother Alice Maud Wagstaff's family (Wagstaffs, Jones and hopefully finding more), tomorrow for a few days. She was born in Stoke Lacy, Herefordshire (1864), to Thomas and Elisabeth Jones. The family settles in Herefordshire but Thomas's POB in the censuses 1851, 81 & 91 is Suckly, Worcester. (Unfortunately his POB in 61 is Much Cowarne and in 71 it is Froom, both Herefordshire!), but there is a birth in the IGI for a Thomas circa the correct time (1835) in Suckly. To a James and Alice (Turner?). Who I believe were married (1832) in Claines, and the 1851 census has James's POB (c1810) as Bredon and Alice's POB (c1810) as Cutsdean. Both of these were described as Worcestershire but I have been informed are now classed as Gloucestershire.

I'd like to try and visit all the places mentioned (including some in other counties but that's another post!). I haven't done any research on the ground in England, all so far on the Internet, mostly here in the great Rootschat forums. So any tips from Worcestarians(?) about these places; where to go, Churches, Graveyards etc would be very welcome. I presume the best place to start would be the Worcestershire Record Office would this be correct? (although I have been told Cutsdean records are Gloucestershire)

Thank you in anticipation,

Hello Grothenwell,

Just a quick point.  Worcestershire's records are currently split between sites.  The family stuff is in the town http://worcestershire.whub.org.uk/home/wcc-records-history-centre  Use the Park and Ride if you can.

Original records are at the County Hall Site http://worcestershire.whub.org.uk/home/wcc-records-head-quarters.

There are also limited records held at Worcestershire Archaeology Service http://worcestershire.whub.org.uk/home/wcc-arch

The Birmingham & Midland Society for Genealogy & Heraldry (BMSGH) have a website with many publications.  http://www.bmsgh.org/  There are also 3 branches that cover the county.  The Worcester branch website have a very useful parish info site http://www.worcesterbmsgh.co.uk/List.html

Good Luck

Hi Mike,

Thank you for that. Unfortunately I didn't have time to visit any of my ancestors sites in Worcestershire (a good excuse to go down another time Smiley). But I did get time to visit the Worcester history centre in trinity street. What a wonderful place and the people who worked there were very helpful. If I had one criticism it would be why didn't it have neighboring counties parish records and censuses on microfilm? For instance my 3 x gt grandmother Alice Turner was born in Cutsdean circa 1810, which was then classed as Worcestershire, it is now classed as Gloucstershire, and the records are kept there. I would have thought that the centre could have had copies of those records too.

Best wishes,

Grothenwell
