Can anyone offer a second opinion please?
« on: Monday 13 July 09 21:44 UTC (UK) »

Hi

I had believed my Gr Gr Grandmother Amy Austin died in 1915.  I had only pencilled this in on my tree and was quite confident I had the date correct (the age matched the year of birth) so wasn't in any rush to order the death certificate.

However, when the 1911 census became available, I found Amy's husband living with their children and recorded as a widower.

I cannot find any trace of Amy in 1911.  I know she was alive and well in 1901 and there's no record of any other death between 1901 and 1911.

I still think that the 1915 one is probably her (in Medway) and will probably still order the death certificate.  What I'm wondering is why her husband would claim to be a widower in 1911.

Any ideas?

She could have left him-, or she could have been in a hospital needing psychiatric care  both of which would have been seen  as a scandal in those days.
On the 1891 census my great grandmother was described as a widow in Manchester but without doubt her (second) husband was on a lighter---provision-boat off the east coast!! He did not die until some years later.Perhaps she had got away from a difficult relationship . There is no record  of him living ar the 1891 address whatsoever. It would have been difficult for her to carry out her trade as dressmaker to some pretty well heeled clients had they known she was seperated. Hope this helps. Viktoria.

Looking at one of your other posts http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,188087.0.html can we assume that she is Amy Ann(ie)?  If so, what about the Amy Ann AUSTEN died 1908 Medway RD (born c1856) or is the age not right?

Hi Viktoria

I was thinking along the Scandal line - Amy was said to have been a 'bit of a drinker' and I did wonder whether her family had disowned her.  However, I think it is more likely that Casalguidi has found her in 1908.

Hi Casalguidi
I think this is going to be her.  Her full name was Amy Ann so this one looks as if its her.  I have just ordered the certificate for 1915 so I'm hoping if I ring GRO first thing tomorrow they will be able to change the details from the 1915 to the 1908 certificate - I could kick myself now Angry

Thank you both for your help
