Hi

i have a grandparent (deceased) who may or may not have served time between 1940s -1980s.Can any records be accessed in regards to this,im thinking not,due to the time frame being fairly recent.

You could try local newspapers to see if his misdeeds (Real  or imagined) appeared there...

lol,thanks pauline i have thought of giving that a try.

the only problem is the person in question moved around a fair bit,and we know very little of this relative,apart from a date of birth,marriage,(quick divorce)!!!,and death...the rest is a mystery,the allegations were made long after the divorce of my grandparents,and may have been made to slander the character of said person.

Records of custody are kept closed for a period of 30 years minimum.  However I think you would need to contact the home office for access after that time should they survive or another alternative contact TNA and ask them where if anywhere they would be housed
