1851 Census Pritchard Ffestiniog
« on: Tuesday 14 July 09 20:33 UTC (UK) »

Could anyone help please with a lookup on the 1851 census in Ffestiniog ?

I'd like to see if there's a David Pritchard born 1848 in Liverpool. I've traced him through his later history in Beddgelert (right up to 1911) but his origins elude me. He's my wife's Great grandfather.

Any details of him and his family would be very much appreciated.

That's tremendous - no sooner the word than the deed!

Thanks very much, really appreciated.

(another family to find now!)

'Ellin Williams Head M 56' - is that Male? I don't think I've a chance of finding the right Williams's in other censusses!

Hi- no Ellin was female- the M =married

Her husband must have been away working.

I tried to find the family in 1841 -but haven't had much luck.

Will try again

Thanks, Suz

With the help of your 1851 info, I think I've found David's parents.

I downloaded the whole of Gwynant St Beddgelert for 1861 and found David there with his widowed mother, Ellen and his brother Ellis (b. 1851)

Now I guess the mother is a Williams (from your census).

I then looked for Ellis on IGI and found his birth which gave me his father Ellis Pritchard (mother Ellen - which ties in)

So a great result, thanks again.

All I need now is to find where Ellis Pritchard (the father) was from and his whereabouts circa 1841 to his death sometime before 1861........

Thanks for your time with this, Suz

Ellen Pritchard (nee Williams) was born between 1816 and 1819

On the 1891 census she's b. 1816 at Dyffryn
On the 1861 census she's b. 1819 at Lladdwywe

(Dyffryn Ardudwy and Llanddwywe are only about 1km apart)

Of her husband Ellis Prichard (note no 't' - another complication) I can find no trace

There is an Ellis Pritchard b. 1821 at Llanrug (1841 census) but I really don't know if its the same one......Huh??

FreeBMD has a David Pritchard b. 3rd qtr 1847 in Liverpool

Any further census info on Ellen or anything at all on Ellis would be very useful

Thanks again for your interest

Viv,
The story of 'Gelert' the dog, who's grave is in Beddgelert, was possibly a made up story by a publican by the name of David Pritchard, possibly linked the the Goat Hotel. Is this the same person that you are looking for?

Hi

The father of David and Ellis Pritchard was in fact Richard Pritchard, not Ellis Pritchard. The baptisms record at Beddgelert church does give Ellis' father as another Ellis Prichard, and I imagine this is where IGI got it. However, Ellis Pritchard's birth certificate gives his father as Richard Pritchard, Mariner (deceased). That this is the correct version is shown by Ellis' marriage certificate and his brother David's birth certificate, which  both give the father as Richard Pritchard. Whoever wrote the entry in the baptisms record must have put "Ellis" down twice by mistake.

I managed to trace Richard Pritchard to Liverpool - he died there on 16th May, 1850, and his age is given on his death certificate as 56.

I should add that the David Pritchard who was landlord of the Goat Hotel, Beddgelert, and inventor of "Gelert's Grave", was a different person. There is no family connection as far as I know.
