Robert HYETT in York (COMPLETED WITH MANY THANKS TO PINETREE)
« on: Wednesday 15 July 09 14:34 UTC (UK) »

Hi,

I hope I'm posting in the correct thread as I know very little of Yorkshire! If anyone is willing to search, I would be grateful if they could please spare the time to look up a baptism for my ggg grandfather. He was born ROBERT HYETT in about 1812. Although living in Herefordshire on all of the censuses he consistently claims to have been born in the City of York around 1811/1812.

I cannot rely upon the family trees of others but I have more possibly accurate information which I would like to have confirmed or discounted. I have a possible baptism for Robert Hyett on 9 Jan 1812 in the Fulford region of the City of York.

I'm hoping this will confirm a link to a HYETT family in Huntley, Gloucestershire. Robert HYETT's parents may possibly be JAMES and SUSANNAH HYETT. This James HYETT was a soldier which may explain why Robert was born in York if his father was billeted there. I'm afraid that is all guess work on my part, which is why I would be grateful if someone could please try and find the parish record of Robert HYETT's baptism at the RO to have proof of his birth and parents.

Thanking you,

Bosuns Call

Bosuns Call,

There is an extracted record on IGI that fits the Fulford information:

http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=igi/search_IGI.asp&clear_form=true

Next time I am at the Borthwick Institute I will check the original record for you if you don't hear from anyone else before then.

Hi Pinetree,

Thank you very much for your very kind offer and thank you very much for pointing me in the direction of familysearch again. It looks very much as if that is my ancestor. Seeing the Hyett spelled with an 'A' explains a bit as the family over the years changed the name between Hyett and Hyatt and even possibly Hiatt. Thank you once again.

Best wishes,

Hi Bosuns Call Smiley,

EDIT AFTER POSTING info Below;
Definitely think I have found the marriage you are looking for after reading your postings on other Threads re connection to Sussannah LADLE Grin Smiley

I think after looking at this family you are very wise to check everything yourself.

1851 census
Common, Huntley, Gloustershire
HO107/1959/559/10

James HYETT, head, mar, 78, pensioner, born Huntley,Glous
Susan, wife, mar, 79, Norfolk,Nw/k? (Norwich?)
+ 1 servant

1841 Census
Huntley Village, Huntley, Glous
HO107/361/2/Huntley

James HYETT, 65, P, yes, born in county
Susan, 70, no, not born in county

Also living nearby is THOMAS Hyett, 30, wife Hanah and family, he is not born in county.
Marriage;
Thomas HYETT, Hannah WATKINS,26 August 1832, Huntley, Gloustershire ( from IGI)

Some of the Trees for this family are mixed up Roll Eyes One has James dying Huntley, America. Another has him marrying in India but no maiden name for Susan/Susannah.

No one has the 1841 census above.

Could this be the marriage as Susannah is fron Norfolk Wink

Jas HIRTT
Sus LADLE
11 February 1794, St Martin at Palace, Norwich, Norfolk

Only possible sibling I can find on IGI;
William HYOTT,  31 August 1800, Totnes, Devon

There are many children, born Ireland, Scotland and England on Trees. Some look very accurate.
Thomas is one of them so think he is the one above in 1841. 1851 census has him born 1809, Canterbury, Kent

Cheers,
Trish

Hi Trish,

Thank you very much for your help and effort. After speaking to members of the Gloucestershire thread I know to be wary of jumping to conclusions.  Wink

As the information for the LDS FamilySearch is fed in by members of the public I know not to rely upon that information as definitive proof.

You are correct on the marriage of James and Susannah. From my Ladle post in the Norfolk thread 'margaretedah' very kindly visited the RO in Norfolk. She saw the parish records on film and could confirm to me the marriage between James HIRTT and Susannah LADLE but the witnesses names were completely illegible. This to me makes HIRTT an almost probable HYETT wrongly spelled by the parish clerk. In some family trees he has been mentioned as a soldier and in the parish records James HIRTT was listed as a soldier.

I have not posted this on the Norfolk thread as yet as I still haven't proved the link to the Ladle's and I don't wish to make any more inaccurate posts. The 1841 and 1851 censuses you mention are the probable ones for this James and Susannah Hyett.

There are lots of children born all over the place and I've found subsequently that a lot of them are recorded inaccurately on the trees.

Hopefully Pinetree or another kind RootsChatter will be able to look at the York parish records. If no other Robert Hyett can be found in the parish records for 1811/1812 then that makes him almost certainly my ancestor. If this James HYATT is listed as a soldier that goes a good way to linking him with the James HYETT I've already found and Susannah Ladle of Norfolk.

It will make my week if James is listed as a soldier and I'm fortunate enough for his regiment to be listed in the parish records. It would at least give me another way of corroborating the identity of James HYETT and help confirm that I've found the correct one. I'm getting ahead of myself as I've still yet to know if this Robert is my ggg grandfather. Only the parish records can offer any form of proof to that question. Thank you for your interest.

Best wishes,

Managed to look up the Fulford record:

HYATT - Robert son of James HYATT Sergeant in his Majesty's Regn the 2nd Dragoon Guards by Susanna his wife born Jan 9th and publically baptized 19th 1812.

Hope that is of some help.

Hi Pinetree,

Thank you very much for all your help and effort. Your discovery has been very helpful and has definitely made my week, month even!

To me this explains a lot. With Robert being born in York and no family connection with the area it makes perfect sense that there was an occupational reason for his parents being in the area. With his father James being a soldier, presumably posted and billeted in York would explain the reason for their being in the city.

As the 2nd Dragoon Guards were a cavalry regiment that explains even more. Robert became a horsekeeper and his brothers worked with horses. Even up to the present day the Hyett family have this strong connection of working with horses.

With this new found information I shall be able to investigate the 2nd Dragoon Guards and hopefully uncover more information about James and his family. I finally have a connection between Robert and James and I can now try and piece together the life of James and Susannah.

Best wishes and many thanks,

Thanks Trish. I would just like to add that thanks to Pinetree finding the regiment in which James served I've already found this website: http://www.qdg.org.uk/index.php

The 2nd Dragoon Guards, known as the Queen’s Bays (as they were mounted on bay horses) became amalgamated with the 1st Dragoon Guards to form the 1st The Queen’s Dragoon Guards as they're known today.

On this website there is a military genealogy service run by the museum. Low and behold in a search they only have one record of a HYETT or anything similar. The soldier in question is one Sergeant James HYETT listed records from 1793-1814. Also present are his wife Susannah and daughter also Susannah and son James. The service is not exactly cheap so I shall order a copy of his records at the end of this month. I'll then post my findings on here, probably in the military section of threads but I'll post a link in this thread.

Many thanks once again to Pinetree for all her help.

Best wishes,
