FOOT family - especially Samuel and James
« on: Wednesday 15 July 09 18:58 UTC (UK) »

Please can anyone help re the origins of Samuel and James Foot who both raised families in Berwick St John but were not baptised there? - They are thought to be brothers as their families were closely linked in Berwick St John. Samuel is presumed to have been born about 1760 as he married 22 year old Lisle Gould in Berwick St John in 1786 - James's date of birth is pure guesswork but it is unlikely to have been later than 1768. James was a carpenter and it's very likely that Samuel was one too.

I have tried all the villages in the immediate vicinity of Berwick St John and also searched the Dorset OPC site, without success.  Sad

Hi Heather,
Such an unusual name, Foot that is, not Heather!

On the 1841 census there are a few Samuel FOOT entries and while non appear to be yours (he would have been quite elderly by then), they seem to be clustered in South Cadbury, Compton Pauncefoot and a couple of other locations  in Somerset.  Might be worth looking at the Somerset OPC site.

Hi LC

Thanks for the tip - I'll go and have a look.

*Edit* - I've had a look - no joy I'm afraid.

Hope this is helpful; I have listed all the information I have:James Foot married Isabella Luffman; she was bHolton Somerset 14 Sep 1793, the daughter of William Luffman and Mary Pitman. I know neither the date or location of the marriage, but would guess before 1830. I have no record of any children.
