Saffron Walden help with a marriage and a few births please

Hello all


I am trying to do a tree for a mate of mine (Jenny) and i need some help from you guys please xx

I have Jabez Richard Butcher (a.k.a. Richard) born circa 1826 Saffron Walden, would like to know if he was bapt. and whom his parents were if possible please.

Also i have Mary Hurry bapt 1816 saffron walden daughter of James Hurry & Catherine..... I'd love to be able to find out Catherine's maiden name, parents & bapt and the parents of James (also his bapt)
James was born circa 1781 (according to census')
Catherine was born circa 1783 (according to the inquest into her death in 1840 she was 57 when she died)

name was also spelt Hurrey.

am keeping fingers crossed that some kind soul will help me

Hi Kath,

Had a look at the Saffron Walden fiche today.  Sorry but could not find the baptism of Jabez Richard Butcher, went several years either side of 1826.  In fact the only two Butchers that I found were 1819 John son of John and Ann and 1822 Edward son of John and Sarah.

However I did find the marriage of the following:

Marriage at Saffron Walden:

James Hurry of this parish to Katherine Edwards of the same
Married by Banns
6 June 1810
Both made their mark
Witnesses:  Joseph Parke, Richard Bush and Mary Huh I could not make out her surname.  It started with an ink blot and the following letters I just couldn't make sense of.

Parke and Bush witnessed several marriages so may have been Church Wardens.

Hope this helps.  I ran out of time today but will look for the bapts of James and C(K)atherine next week if you want that.

Hi Kath,

Half a result again.  I looked at the Saffron Walden baptisms 1781 to 1785.  The writing was beautiful in its own way but difficult to read, he did his M's, W's and H's with just two downward strokes with no middles so they all looked much the same!

It was faint in places but I don't think I missed anything but unfortunately did not find C(K)atherine Edwards baptism (or any Edwards in those years), perhaps she came from a nearby parish.

Anyway found the following baptism at Saffron Walden:

1781 October (possibly the 10th, very difficult to make out the figures)
James son of James and Ann Hurry

1785 November 20
Willm son of James and Ann Hurry

You could try getting Jabez's marriage certificate to see who his father was,

Jabez BUTCHER    Mar Q 1847     Saffron Walden    12  305
Mary HURRY with same details.

I will look to see if P.R. marriage fiche for S.W. go up to 1847 and get his father's name from there if so.

Hi,
There is no marriage for Jabez Butcher in St Mary's church, Saffron Walden in 1847. Perhaps they were Non Conformist or married elsewhere in Saffron Walden district.

Hi,

Yes I discovered that it wasn't there this afternoon.   

In a book I have on S.W. it does say that the name Hurry is to be found in the records of the General Baptists of Hill Street, Saffron Walden.  Equally likely, as you say, it was a parish that fell under the district of S.W.
