High Street, Tarring, Worthing COMPLETED
« on: Thursday 16 July 09 17:41 UTC (UK) »

I have just been given a letter dated 1943 from a solicitor to my Grandfather informing of his sister's death.

Her name was Ada Millicent Clifford (she was unmarried) and her address is given as "Rossi", High Street, Tarring, Worthing.

I have been having a dig on Ancestry to see if I can find any information in telephone directories, but no luck.

I would be very grateful if anyone could tell me how (and if) I could find out any more information about this address - maybe even a photo?? Grin

with many thanks

If you can lay hands on a copy of Kelly's or the "Blue Book"  for that period or earlier they have an index to houses & villas in the back, might have the answer, or just search High St Tarring to see if it listed by house name. Pete

Hello Pete

Many thanks for your reply and the PM - Unfortunately as I live in France, I will have trouble getting either of the books.  But I shall do as you suggest in your PM; also I have just found a site dedicated to Tarring and I shall contact them too (tarring.inthepast.org.uk) .

Thank you again for your help

Google Maps shows where abouts High Street is and the Satellite View shows what it looks like now, but as the house is named, rather than numbered, it doesn't show a specific location.

I just searched for  High Street, Tarring on here:-  http://maps.google.co.uk

Hi, I live in Worthing and go through Tarring regularly.  If I get a chance I will have a look for you.

Hello Bob and Allan

Many thanks for your replies.  I have had a look at the satellite image on Google.... and I would be very grateful, Allan, if you did find the house.

I forgot to say in my original post that Ada must have named the house herself - "Rossi" is the name of one of our ancestors (an Italian sculptor).  Also I know she wasn't there in 1911 as I have the census for her.

Thank you again for your help

Hi Tilly
I walked up the High Street tonight after work but while a large number of the houses have names plus in some cases numbers, I couldn't find a 'Rossi'.
There are a couple that are set back but I didn't intrude.
I will see what I can find from local knowledge and contacts.
Fingers crossed.

Hello Allan

Many thanks - I hope the High Street isn't ten miles long!!

The house must have been called something else before she moved in - and maybe when she died and the house was sold (? - I don't know if she owned the house or rented it), the name changed again.  I wish they had given a number in the letter!

Thank you again for all your help

Hi Tilly
No it is quite short really.  I parked at the southern end and it took about 10 minutes to walk its length.  Because it is narrow, I could see both sides as I walked.  When I walked back I walked on the opposite side again checking both sides just to make sure.
As I mentioned, there are a couple set back which I will check on.
At the northern end, there is some new development but as Tarring is proud of this street, they wouldn't have knocked anything down.
I work for the Council so I will ask around to see if they still have old electoral registers or similar.
It has to be there lol.

Hello again Allan

I have just this minute - since sending last message - received a copy of a mail sent to my distant "Rossi Cousin" in America by another cousin.  Here is what it says :

Interestingly in 1914 there was a Miss Clifford living in "Rossi",
> Browning Road, Worthing (close to Tarring). The attached list of
> houses in sequence could enable you to see which house using
> multimap's birds-eye view. Rossi is fourth on the right from Heene
> Road.

There is an attachment with the mail from the Worthing and District Directory 1914 - 1915. According to the list she is next to a house called "Green Stede".

What do you think?  Is there some sort of muddle up in the addresses? Or did she move from  Browning Road to High Street?
 Huh

Interesting!!

Me again!!

I have just had a flash of inspiration!!  Looking at the list of names of people living in the same road as Ada, her neighbour  is a Mrs B Rope who lives in a house called "Epor".  I thought this seemed familiar - and have just checked - this is in fact her widowed sister, Blanche, who is at this address in the 1911 census!

Hi
Browning Road is a fair walk from High Street and I wonder if she named all her houses Rossi.  I know Browning Road so can easily check and photograph that house.
Are Green Stede and Epor both in Browning?

Hello Allan

Green Stede and Epor (Blanche Rope (née Clifford's) house) are either side of Rossi.

PM on its way!

Up to the mid 1930s and before the Rectory Road by-pass was built,  High Street ,West Tarring ran from Church Road to the Thomasa'Becket (Littlehampton Road/Poulters lane junction)
and the  northern half was probably re-named Rectory Road post 1945.
