Good evening,
thanks to two wonderful Rootschatters in the USA and Canada research into the Groundwater family has come on leaps and bounds this week. A new clue has now come to light and I wonder if anyone with knowledge of Bangor Co Down could help me please.
This is the thread on the Canada board
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=392451.msg2639587
What I would like to do next is find out if Hugh Groundwater was baptised in Bangor. Why he was born there. Did Jane Groundwater die there, and then buried there. Hugh was born 1856/7
I have looked via Google but each avenue I have tried has come to a dead end. I am hoping local knowledge and an experienced researcher from the area could suggest where I should try next.
Would anyone know if ships sailing to Canada from Scotland would have docked in Ireland perhaps. I am willing to follow up any clue.
Thank you for your time
Meg
Heading amended. If anyone is able to look up baptism and burials for the period 1855 to 1860 for the name Groundwater, this may answer the query. Thank you

:)I live in Bangor, Co. Down. The name Groundwater is not a common one here, but I will see what I can do to find something out for you. As to the questions about ships leaving Scotland/England docked in the Ireland on their way over the pond, they did indeed, they would have docked in the port of Queenstown, County Cork, where the it was the last port of call for Titanic. Also the Port of Londonderry, County Londonderry. I had three uncles that left here in different years from 1884 - 1909 for USA.

Meg, its Mabes again, I have been checking the north of Ireland for the name Groundwater from the 1800s onwards and nothing has turned up, including BMDs. The only Groundwater that appeared was William, marriage in 1853 in County Limerick. Does this sound familiar.

Hello Mabes and aghadowey, the information regarding shipping is very interesting. Thank you for letting me know about this.
Mabes, your offer to hopefully find something out about the Groundwaters is wonderful. I think I can pinpoint the dates to 1854 to 1861, as in Canada by 1861. I am beginning to wonder if the family actually left Scotland to live and work in Bangor. Hugh being born there. No trace of his mother in Canada, so did she die in Bangor. Fingers crossed there are records of baptisms and burials surviving for this period. I am very grateful for your time. Meg

Most Presbyterian Church in Ireland did not keep burial records. Many Presbyterians were, however, buried in Church of Ireland, graveyards and may, or may not, be included in C. of I. burial register (if any exists for that period).
