Finding the Vaughan family
« on: Thursday 16 July 09 21:39 UTC (UK) »

Hi all

I'm having problems tracking down my Vaughan ancestors past George Vaughan, aka Vaone (various spelling). He was born around 1773 and died 1840-1850 in the US.

The problem is due to the Vaughan's jumping across the border between Sussex and Kent. George married his wife in 1793 at Wadhurst, which he mentions he is of Sandhurst, Kent. They then raised their children in Sandhurst, until they left for the states in 1840.

I believe that he had a brother, John (c.1765 - 1821), who married both his wives in Sandhurst, but raised his family in Ewhurst. On his first marriage record, John lists himself as being of Ticehurst, but a quick check on the IGI showed no Vaughan in those parish records

I've checked the majority of the parish records on the Kent side of the border for George and John, and a few on the Sussex side, but have had no luck so far. Has anyone come across this family or would anyone be able to check some of the parishes near the Kent border for them?

Thanks

Have you had a look at the Vaughans of Igtham on IGI batch number  C131501?
These were the Children of a William & Mary Vaughan

ELIZABETH VAUGHAN - Christening: 01 APR 1770 Ightham, Kent,
THOMAS VAUGHAN - Christening: 12 MAY 1771 Ightham, Kent,
GEORGE VAUGHAN - Christening: 29 SEP 1776 Ightham, Kent,
MARY VAUGHAN - Christening: 31 JAN 1773 Ightham, Kent,

The date is a couple of years out, but the place could be about right.

Alternatively, try batch number C131502 (Children of Isaac Vaughan in the same village)
Isaac had a son John born around the right time, so was John a cousin not a brother of George?
Isaac also had a son George, but his baptism was in 1760.
What age was stated on George's marriage cert or emigration papers, and did he go voluntarilly or was it as the result of an offence?  (1830s Swing Riots?)

Hi Roy

I did see the Igtham records on IGI, but dismissed them on the account of the wrong dates.

On his emmigration papers to the states, George lists himself as 67 (c.1773), a Farmer from England.

There is another potential another sibiling I saw in the IGI: A Prisiclla Vaughan who was married in 1802 at Ewhurst to a Joseph Baker. Again, I can't find a sutiable baptism record for her either
