Hi
My John Kelly was born, I think around 1818 in Bristol. His Father was Michael Kelly who died in 1839 at Castle Precincts, Bristol. On John's death certificate in 1894 in Creswick, Victoria, Australia, his mother was Mary Ann Hart.
Could anyone help me find John's birth, parent's marriage and possibly how or when John came to Australia??

Shakel welcome to rootschat.
Is there any indication on the death certificate as to how long he had been in Australia? With a name like JOHN KELLY you will need as much detail as you have to narrow down your research time frame.
Where have you looked and whom have you ruled out?
For example into Victoria we have the following persons named John Kelly:
aged 38 OCT 1852 on the WANATA
35 FEB 1850 on the LADY KENNAWAY
24 JAN 1841 on the SIR CHARLES FORBES
27 SEP 1840 on the HIMALAYA
24 NOV 1839 on the WILLIAM METCALFE
to list a few in the assisted immigrants list alone.
All the above plus more could be considered as ages are often inaccurate in the indexes. I haven't even looked at unassisted migration or migration into the other states or looked at convict indents.

thanks for your help - you are very brave answering this with a name like John Kelly!!
It seems so daunting - and impossible 
His birth date seems to vary according to what certificate you're looking at - but - 1818 seems to be the most common.
He was married at Indented Head - 1851 - very poor quality certificate with very little information - unlike other marriage certificates from Victoria.
On his death cert it says he was in the colonies for 48 years - arrival date approx 1846. He would have been about 28 years old.

No John Kelly into Victoria in that time period with an even approxmate age.
There was a John Kelly in 1846 to Tasmania as a convict details :http://www.slq.qld.gov.au/info/fh/convicts search by John Kelly.
also departures from Tasmania many of whom would have come from th eUK then on to the mainland at http://portal.archives.tas.gov.au/menu.aspx?search=2
and in there this man may be of particular interest:
John Kelly a Passenger on the Julia 25 Sep 1846 from Hobart to Port Phillip he is listed as an Immigrant CUS36/1/314

Wonderful links - there are quite a few possibilities.
Where would I find passenger lists of people leaving England bound for Tassie - that could eliminate a few?? I like the look of the one you pointed out - if we could find out where he came from. Also there are a few convict possibilities as many of them can also be eliminated - due to age, date and where convicted.
The reference number - CUS36/1/314 - with the John Kelly departing Hobart for Port Phillip - where would I source that information?

CLick on http://portal.archives.tas.gov.au/menu.aspx?search=2
then name indexes then departures and search for John Kelly. The refeerence number should then be clickable as a link but finding him may take a bit of patience!!.
If all else fails use the referenece number and contact the archives and fora fee they will supply the info.
There are several commercial sites that have the outgoing passneger lsits from the uK but I don't subscsribe to them,
If you are reasonably sure of year and ship another rootschatter may then be able to help.

Sorry I can't help with the Bristol end of things but perhaps a post in the appropriate board on rootschat my help.
I have had great help posting on the middlesex board for assistance in ancestors born in a few different parts of Middlesex, same with posts in Kincardinshire in Scotland and Glamorgan in WAles.
The more specific you an be and the more detail you post the easier it is for people to take up the query.
