Hi Zoe

I spoke to a member of the " Friends of Welford Road Cemetery" at their building at the entrance to the cemetery. He checked his files and told me that the records show that ANN TESTER purchased 2 adjacent burial plots. Ref UE 595 & 596. One contained AMOS, LUCY and AMOS TESTER. Deaths being  1884, 1893 and 1933 respectively. Disappointingly there was no headstone. The other plot has a plush grand headstone. From my photo it reads exactly as this :-

                                                 IN
                                        Loving Memory Of
                                           JABEZ TESTER
                                     Died Oct 14th 1854
                                        Aged 44 Years
                                Also ANN Wife Of The Above

                                 Died Oct 2nd 1871

                                 Aged 72 Years

Hi Zoe - Had to use 2 sheets. The system did not like a long reply

Now, the records show MARY TESTER as dying in 1852. But the grave says 1854. If it was 1854 it would have been 2 weeks after JABEZ died. As the last entry was 1912 perhaps the stone Mason made a mistake?

I see the 1881 Census shows JOHN TESTER as being 44 at that time and living with his family. His age would be consistent with him being AMOS's son from the first marriage.

The Letter you have looks very interesting indeed.

Will try and locate Johnathan's grave in St GEORGES church yard soon. I have a reference of 1433. Oh, Johnathan died the year before Welford Road Cemetery opened. Perhaps thats why ANN purchased 2 plots to keep the family together. Well a lot to digest!

The site would'nt let me on till late. So will certainly send you the photo's tomorrow, no problem. Looking forward to your info on the Testers and perhaps also you could indicate your connection to the Testers when you have my email adress. After Amos my GG/Grandfather was Richard Tester ( 1857 - 1938 )
