Did you have to be Christened to be Married in 1817
« on: Friday 17 July 09 11:32 UTC (UK) »

Hi all
can anyone tell me if you had to be christened to be married in the church in 1817
My 3x Great grandmother Ann Jane Shorto was born in 1792, and according to the England and Wales Christening Records 1530 - 1906 she was christened on 29 apr 1815 which would make her 23 years old.  She was christened in Sydling Dorset and then married my 3x G Grandfather James Bow(e)ring on 11th January 1817.

Was a Christening a pre requisite for the marriage
thanks
Chris

I don't know the answer to your question (although I suspect the answer is yes).

However, the baptism you are looking at is two years before the marriage - so not all that likely to have been especially for that purpose.

The IGI shows the baptism as having been at St Nicholas Hope Independent, that is, it wasn't CofE, and may have been a church which practised adult baptism.

Many thanks Galium, I didn't think to look in the IGI, so much to learn....so many family members.
Once again thanks for your help
