JAGO Maker Cornwall
« on: Friday 17 July 09 14:41 UTC (UK) »

To any Cornish Jagos that may be able to help.

I have been trying to find Elizabeth the wife of George Crossman. George was a labourer and born 1779 Devon . I believe that they lived in Tavistock 1804 onwards.

There is a marriage in Kelly parish on 21 Sep 1803 between George Crossman and Elizabeth Jago both were sojourners in the parish.

According to Elizabeth death certificate she died 9 Aug 1845 in Tavistock and was born 1778.

I searched the IGI for a candidate and found Elizabeth Jago christened 25 1778 in Maker Cornwall, her parents were Robert Jago and Mary Hender (they married 3 Dec 1776 Maker). This has been confirmed by OPC for Maker. The record C052871 also shows christenings in Maker Cornwall for siblings Robert Jago 1779, John Jago 1782, Ann Jago 1782, Mary Jago 1782, William Hender Jago 1790, Thomas Jago 1792

(Incidentally George and Elizabeth’s last son was Robert born 1813 in Tavistock)

Does anyone have any knowledge of this Jago family? Perhaps this Elizabeth Jago died young and cannot be George’s wife (I know his wife was not Elizabeth Ford).  My Elizabeth was born abt 1778.

Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Smiley

In 1841 George and Elizabeth Crossman are both in Tavistock and both say YES to born in County, ie: Devon.

Why do you say That Elizabeth Ford is not his wife?

Robert Crossman is on the same page as George and Elizabeth in 1841. He, along with wife and children, are also born in County.

IGI shows that Elizabeth Crossman d/o Robert and Eliza was born:
23 NOV 1838   Tavistock ...her mother was Eliza JAGO

Robert and Eliza's other daughter, Mary/Polly was born : 4 NOV 1836, Tavistock (IGI)..mother Eliza JAGO

Son Thomas is 6 months in 1841.

according to a submitted entry we have:
Thomas Jago Crossman s/o Robert Crossman and Eliza Jago
born 10 FEB 1841,Tavistock
died: 7 APR 1842

hi again :0

I see on IGI that supposedly, from a submitted entry that Elizabeth Ford died in 1811 after marrying George Crossman in 1799. If Elizabeth Ford died in 1811 how could the same George Crossman marry Elizabeth jago in 1803 as his first wife is still alive.

Robert Crossman IGI
20 DEC 1815   Tavistock
son of George and Elizabeth

In 1851
Robert Crossman (35) is still with his wife Eliza and has more children:
Robert 7
John 5
Eliza 1

They are all in Booth street (same as 1841), Tavistock.
Living with them is Robert's brother John Crossman, 50 b Tavistock

There is a christening of a John Crossman 1804, Tavistock with parents George Crossman and Elizabeth .

Hi Debb
Thanks for your interest. I started a post regarding the Crossmans and have since found out enough information since to be quite confident that there were two George and Elizabeth Crossmans and that my Elizabeth was not Elizabeth Ford.

Elizabeth Crossman born 1774 nee Ford was buried before the birth of both William 1812 and Robert 1815 (I just need to add a few bits of information and I will post all my findings at the end of previous post as there have been a few helping there - who may have to help some more as there are other questions!).

Meanwhile, I have been trying to find out who the 'other' Elizabeth born 1778 was. DOB7 directed me to a marriage in Kelly Parish in 1803. Elizabeth and George were sojourners in the Parish. From the 'other' (I believe mine) Elizabeth's death certificate and burial I can guess her birth date which lead me to her christening in Maker Cornwall (later Devon) which is why I asked if anybody had any knowledge of this branch of the Jago family (I have already been in touch with the Maker OPC).

We may never know who she was but I wanted to try all possibilities before I gave up.
Thank you again for your help
