Matthew Eddy
« on: Saturday 18 July 09 09:04 UTC (UK) »

I am trying to trace my grandfather:

Name: Matthew Eddy
Year of birth: 1866
Place of birth: Botrea, New Bridge, Penzance, Cornwall, England
Occupation: Blacksmith / Publican

who went to South Africa (location unknown) in the early 1900s, leaving behind his wife and two sons. I have found a "M. Eddy" in a passenger list for a vessel of unknown name leaving Southampton for South Africa in 1909, which seems very likely to be him.

It is possible that he might have sought work in the mining industry.

He never returned to the UK.

If anyone is able to supply any information about my grandfather, or provide links that may be of assistance, I would be very grateful. I have already searched many of the NAAIRS databases, unsuccessfully.

Thanks Izabel. Much appreciated. But unfortunately I don't think that's the same Matthew Eddy as it shows the date 29/12/99 and I can place the Matthew Eddy I am trying to trace in Cornwall at least until 2007.

Sorry Izabel, I meant 1907 in my previous message, not 2007!

Hello,

I am transcribing the Railway Pioneer Regiment and would be more than happy to send you the enlistment form later this week if you would like.
