Dorey family
« on: Saturday 18 July 09 16:06 UTC (UK) »

I'm trying to fill in the family tree going back from Percy Dorey married to Georgina Gotchier, their children were Paul, Edwin, Edith, Ralph, June, and Earl. This part of the family was from Ganaoque Ontario. Any information further back would be great. I'm Junes grand daughter

Hi June's granddaughter.  Grin

Would you have any dates of birth please, and was Percy born in Ontario?  Have you found them on any census or have you tried other sites (so we don't duplicate efforts)?  Are you interested in Georgina's information as well?

Was Percy born April 1892?  There was a Percy Dorey living in Gananoque who was 19 on the 1911 census.  You can view the actual image.  If this was him (and not a nephew or grandson, or some other relation), the census shows his parents and siblings:

Hi Brandy, before we take the time to follow this Percy's family, you mentioned you "think it is him."  Would you know your great grandfather's date of birth, please, or anything else about him, so we can make sure we are following the correct family?  Since his children have more recent dates of birth, it would not be a good idea to include any of their information.  Wink  Also, would you know what your great grandfather's occupation was (in case he had the same occupation as his father)?

In case you don't know, there are a lot of Dorey individuals buried in St. John's Roman Catholic Cemetery, Gananoque, including Percy (Percival).
http://www.islandnet.com/ocfa/search.php
(Search for Dorey and St John's Roman Catholic)
Unfortunately, this is only an index, so it doesn't give any dates.

This site has at least Percival's headstone information:
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~onleedsg/docs/ld_cem_stjohns.htm
There may be additional Dorey headstones (not taking the time to look).

And another site:

You can search the 1881 and 1891 census by name and view the images at Library and Archives Canada. Here are the links:
http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/census-1881/index-e.html
http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/census-1891/index-e.html

On the 1891 census the family is listed as Dora (father as Severil) and are in Leeds South. On the 1881 census they are listed as Dorey (father as Severe) and are in Addington (starts on line 9 of the bottom image).

Percy's DOB is april 29 1893 and he died in Nov. of 1972. Found this on the only picture I have of him with my mom and me as a baby. I'm not sure what he did for his occupation

Hi Brandy:
That should confirm that he was the son of Sevare/Severe Dorey.  (As found on the 1901 Ontario Census.)

Someone on RootsWeb has Percy in their tree (I don't know how accurate the information is):
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi
Search for Dorey and Percival

If you are living in Canada, perhaps you might be able to obtain an actual image of a story about Percy's father from your local library or LDS Centre?
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~onleedsg/docs/gr_bmd_1936_1949.htm
Search for Severe
Apparently, there was a story about him in 1948.

The newspaper staff might be able to tell you where/how you could view the 1948 story.
http://www.gananoquereporter.com/

You could try writing to the library to see if they can recommend how you might view the 1948 story.  (Perhaps it was an obituary?)

There is a birth for a Lena Dorey, born June 7th, 1889, Olden, Frontenac, Ontario on the IGI
to parents Frank Dorey and Mary Major...
That would be brother Frank ...silly me

this site (headstones  St John's Roman Catholic Cemetery)
has dates of death - Frank 1879, Maria 1892
