Charles Stocker b Mortimer c 1742 Baptism lookup please
« on: Sunday 19 July 09 10:39 UTC (UK) »

Hi
I have a Charles Stocker who married Ann Bridgman (she was a widow on marriage, married name Tyrel) in East Woodhay 21 Aug 1762.  On my copy of Phillimores marriage regs it shows him as being of Mortimer, Berkshire.

Could anyone help me find his baptism/birth details please?

All help greatly appreciated.

Regards
Steph

Hello Steph,
I can't help you at the moment with your query, but you have perhaps helped me. I have your Charles and Ann Stocker on my tree as tiny twigs, and have some forward info on their 7 children. Ann was married to John Tyrell before Charles Stocker.

What I also have is an-as-yet, unconnected, Stocker family in Stratfield Mortimer starting in 1786 with George Stocker. Your information is one more addition to my thoughts that this is where the Stocker family originated.

Unfortunately, the Stratfield Mortimer registers have not been, and are not likely to be, published. There are a few on IGI and some also for the Independant Church at Mortimer West End, but it is a case of paying for a search or doing it yourself in Reading.

Yours

A bit pessimistic!  I am sure that all PRs will be published eventually - though, perhaps, not that soon.

It is very rare for me to visit the Berks RO and not find people there transcribing or checking PRs for Berks FHS - some volunteers give a huge amount of time to this work - and it does bear fruit.  I think the next one to come will be Reading St Laurence (a huge transcription job). Their efforts do seem to be concentrated on the many Reading parishes at present - but that's just my impression from the occasions when I notice what they are working on.

If anyone can get to Reading they could help speed up the process by joining in and  transcribing for Berks FHS (contact projects@berksfhs.org.uk) - or FreeReg or even publish them independently.

Hello,
I think, as you well know, NewburyChap, that the Berks Record Office will NOT allow publication of Parish Records on freereg or anywhere else on a general scale for distribution. It quotes copyright as the reason. That is one of the reasons why some records formerly published by the Federation of Family History Societies  that were online have had to be removed.

Most people transcribing are probably doing so  for the benefit of people who can visit the RO or Berks FHS next door. More power to their elbow, but for those who cannot get to Reading to see them, or to transcribe, or are unable to afford to pay fees for distance searches, the situation is as I said.

The RO policy has not changed since 2007. If you remember, both you and I contributed to a long discussion on this subject on this forum http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,216951.0.html  that has recently been updated with further discussion by other people.
The RO Archivist clearly laid it out in a letter to a contributer.

There are a number of points at issue:

1) Berkshire FHS and Oxfordshire FHS are actively transcribing parish registers from the BRO. Its inevitable that Berks FHS will get round to Stratfield Mortimer eventually. Though it is likely to be a long wait (unless someone is already at work on them).

2) The Eureka Partnership have done most of the nonconformist and workhouse registers - demonstrating that a private organisation is not barred from the BRO.

3) Transcribers from the above organistions are transcribing for publication - not just for something to put on the shelves at the BRO or Berks FHS Research Centre. There are a lot of old transcripts that are only available at the BRO or local libraries - these were done before the days of PCs and only exist as typescript and carbons.

4) Berks RO (or rather Oxford Diocese) have refused the LDS permission to digitise filmed registers and pass them to FreeReg.  This they can do under copyright legislation.  What they cannot do is prevent anyone from extracting factual information from the registers and doing what they want with it - you cannot copyright facts.  Obviously they can stop anyone accessing the registers in the BRO - but they would probably have problems with their remit to make records freely available.  However, they cannot prevent anyone accessing filmed copies at any LDS Family History Centre and transcribing those.

5) The Diocese will probably come to its senses one day and either remove the obstacle currently blocking FreeReg or license the records to Ancestry, FindMyPast or somesuch. And once the Diocese does decide that online access is not some evil the LDS will add them to the queue to be digitised and put online.

One day there will be online access to all extant parish registers via the Internet or whatever might replace it in the future - it's inevitable, but sadly not imminent. If not before, the copyright issue will be resolved in 2039(ish) when parish registers will enter the public domain.
