Looking for confirmation of dates of births of George Ernest Button (approx 1896), Agnes Button (approx 1897) and William Button (approx 1899), all children of Sgt George Button and his wife Elizabeth Golds, at the Royal Highlanders Queen's Barracks, Perth. There were two other children as well, not born in Perth: Helen (approx 1893, Glasgow?) and Elizabeth (approx 1891, Ireland?). Any help greatly appreciated ! - Stephen

Hi Stephen
Scotlands People www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk have just one of them listed using Button with soundex ~
George Ernest in Perth, 1896
I'll try wildcards. You could try yourself as it's pay to view and they have the online monopoly
To view the certs will cost 6 cedits (=£1.20)
It's being very slow at the moment though

Many thanks. The monopoly thing is horrible. I haven't had to stray north of the border much, but it's a great pity there's no equivalent of FreeBMD -and that explains why I couldn't find one! OK, will pay my own way on ScotlandsPeople then.

There is a BMD exchange:
http://www.sctbdm.com/index.php
But I've not find anything on it so far when I've searched. It might be that the ones they have are concnetrated in particular areas.
Where did you get the dates from? I only put in a narrow range (1895-1900)
I'll check on a broader range.

PS - I think I'd rather pay £1.20 for an instant cert than £7 and a wait for an Eng & Wales one

Only one that's coming up on the larger range is an Archibald Alexander Button, Perth 1901.

Many thanks again. The approximate dates are from 1901 census data. Archibald was presumably born after the census date - but I have now found him on a second cousin's tree so he is probably genuinely one of us!
Here's photo of their father George Button, by the way. Odd to see a Sussex man in the kilt!

I've seen many men from all over the world in kilts at weddings
Could Agnes and William have been born elsewhere. I've double checked and can't find them on SP. Maybe overseas births or Ireland/Eng & Wales
It might be worth checking on where the Royal Highlanders were 1897-1900 (maybe South Africa ? )

Possibles on the GRO Regimental Birth Index (1761-1924
Button, Agnes M, York, 1897 91st Regiment vol 190 p 131
Also
Button, William H, Aldershot, 1899 91st Regiment vol 190 p 131
I think the 91st were the Highland Regiment:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/91st_Regiment_of_Foot
not up in military though

I think you can order these certs online from GRO as normal Eng & Wales ones but you have to check the appropriate box. Certainly this is the case for overseas births.

(There - bet you wished they'd been born Scotland - £14 rather than £2.40 )

Gadget - that was a brilliant idea! I had assumed naively that George was in Perth continuously for the several years before 1900. I know that in 1901-2 the Royal Highlanders were in South Africa, because my great-uncle George Henley (yes, another George) was serving with the there. Odd, come to think of it, that George Button wasn't also away for the 1901 census.
(There - bet you wished they'd been born Scotland - £14 rather than £2.40 - ah well, you win some, you lose some!)

He was in York and then Aldershot (or his wife was) - see my previous message
PS - I think many were back by 1901. Maybe a different batallion than Uncle George
