John Fairgrieve
« on: Monday 20 July 09 17:05 UTC (UK) »

I'm trying to find info on John Fairgrieve born 1800, married Jane Watson in 1824, he died in Gateshead in 1848, but I cannot find anything on his Parents, or where he came from, the Fairgrieve name is misspelt on the different census formes. from Faregreve, Feargreve,
Thanks Alan...

Hi Alan

You probably already have the burial:
St. John's Church, Gateshead Fell
22 Mar 1848 John Fairgrieve, of Sheriff Hill  aged 48

Looking for possible parents, IGI has this marriage:
John FARGRIEVE to      Mary KIDD
22 Nov 1802      Gateshead, Durham, England

and their possible children:
James FAIRGRAVE  Birth:  1 Aug 1815  Christening: 23 Aug 1815 Gateshead Matthew FAIRGRAVE  Birth: 25 Feb 1818  Christening: 25 Mar 1818 Gateshead
Mary FAIRGREAVE Birth: 17 Sep 1820  Christening: 16 Oct 1820 Gateshead

1841 census for this family:
HO107 Piece 296 Book 16 Folio 42    Page 30
Brunswick Street, West Side, Gateshead
FEARGRIVE
John   65   Ag Lab
Mary  60
Mary  20
all born County Durham

but the 1841 census for your John and Jane FARGROVE  (if I have the right family in 1841) shows John as being born outside County Durham, as were their two eldest children.

Have you seen the 1824 marriage on the Bishops' Transcripts for Gateshead?
http://www.rootschat.com/links/06s5/ click on Gateshead 1823-32 and then page 56
Unfortunately it doesn't give much more detail than the IGI, they were both 'of this parish' but that only means they were living there at the time of the marriage, not that they were born there. Witness names are Mary Hall and George Walton, perhaps they may be members of the family? It looks as if they married the same day and are the next entry in the register!
Perhaps if you look through the transcripts for the children's baptisms, there may be more information on John there

no I did not have the burial at St John's thanks I did see the marriage of John & Mary Kidd on the IGI but do you think thay would  have had a child then married some two years latter,
found the marriage of John & Jane with Mary Hall & George Walton wonder if it's worth getting there marrage certificate to see his fathers name.
Thanks for now away to digest the rest of your email.

Hi Alan,

John may have been born later than 1802, census ages can be wrong and so can burial ages, that's why I wondered if you had the death cert, those can also be wrong, depending on how well the informant knew the deceased!

found the marriage of John & Jane with Mary Hall & George Walton wonder if it's worth getting there marrage certificate to see his fathers name.

No - it was in 1824, no marriage cert before 1837 just the parish register entry as in the Bishops' Transcripts, so no parental information.

Sometimes the BT's of children's baptisms give parents' details, where they were born etc, some don't, but worth looking for John's children in BT's just in case
