Hello Pauline

It would help immensely if you could give some indication as to the dates of the events you mention.

Anna,

I have looked at this one & thought the same thing but I then found a bapt for Titus Elliott
18th Mar 1817 Alfeton  mother Sarah.

I then looked at the 1841 census & think this is Titus with wife & child.

Ho107/4193  book 1  Folio 8  pge 10
Street  Alfreton

Titus Elliott  age 25   F W  ? Cotton  born in County Y
Harriett  age 20    b   ditto
Emma  age 1   b   ditto.

Tried to find anything in the 1841 for Sarah Elliott but without a birth date etc it proved difficult.   The same for Samuel Fletcher, they were all married, mainly born late 1700s.   Again, nothing was found for a possible Sarah Fletcher.

So, the probable answer to this is that Sarah Elliott never married Samuel Fletcher, indeed, he could even have been one of the married Samuel Fletchers in the 1841 census with a wife & family.

thanks for reply, the removal record for Sarah was in 1816, so the christening date fit,s, unfortunately it does not mention sarah,s age,
i,ve traced titus through all the census returns so i guess it,s just a case of digging through the archive,s at matlock maybe sarah,s age may be on the christening entry?Huh

There is a possibility Sarah could have also been very young when Titus was born.

I found an interesting submitted entry on Familysearch for a Sarah Elliott, born 1802, Alfreton, marrying in 1823 ( 10 Feb) with no spouse named.

Further searching found a marriage to George WHARTON,
10 February 1823, Alfeton, Derby. (extracted record)
1871 Census Sarah Wharton is born 1802, Swanick
RG10/3592/8/8

It is just a possibility and there is another Sarah Elliott born abt 1791 as well.

In any case it is likely Sarah married and probably not to the Father of her child Titus.

Cheers,
Trish

Hi Sarah
I am not sure how these removal records worked - did you see that in the records for Alfreton?  South Normanton also have settlement certificates and bastardy bonds. Perhaps there would be a clue there. It might be worth looking forwards from that date to see if Sarah had anymore "little accidents" in South Normanton. List of some South Normanton stuff here http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/DBY/DARG/Other.html

Hi Pauline.

The removal order for Sarah Elliot, who was being removed from Alfreton
to South Normanton was in 1815, How sure are you that the Sarah of the
removal is the mother of your Titus?
If she was, then there must be another child born before Titus, if we assume
the bpt of 1817 was near his birth date.

She was being removed, because she was pregnant and so unable to support herself and the baby, to the place of her birth South Normanton.  It is also possible that she was not actually born in South Normanton, but her parents may have been given a settlement certificate which entitled them to reside in SN.

The following site, by Michael Spencer gives lots of other transcriptions
