Mary Ann Owens - The bravest woman I never knew
|
Hi Everybody,
Thanks for reading this post! I am a bit usure where o post this thread because it concerns Bristol...I thought Gloucestershire might be my best bet though seeng as though we are dealing with old Bristol
I am struggling to find any definite death records for two of my direct ancestors. On the 1841 census I have a James Westcott aged 60 (baptised in 1777) living in St Mary Redcliffe, Bristol, next door to his daughter Caroline who had married Moses Vertine in 1837. I cannot find James on the 1851 census (he was a Cabinet Maker) so I presume he was deceased. Could anybody that has access please try and find his burial please? He married a lady called Louisa but there has been great confusion over her maiden name. It seems to have been recorded as Pallin, Palling, and even one time Polleu but it may have been in the instance of the latter, a mis-transcription. She was born around 1779 presumably somewhere in the Bristol or Temple area, and her and James’ first daughter Hannah was baptised in St Michael’s, Bristol, in 1808, which means Louisa died anytime between the birth of her last daughter (baptised in 1817) and 1841
I cannot seem to narrow James’s death/burial down enough as there are two or three possibilities that come up in Gloucestershire for the 1841-51 timeframe. It would be great if one of the many good people on here could come up with something a bit more certain.
Thankyou again for reading this post. I am very interested in James as it appears he was also able to vote, as I have him down as voting in 1822 for Henry Hunt, who later in Manchester played a key role in the Peterloo Massacre.
Regards and thanks again.

Pardon me Carol seem to have got muddled up with another search I was doing at the same time.
So it would seem that James died in 1849. I searched again you are right about there only being one entry on BMD, so my apologies for being mistaken.
I may have to order the parish registers from the LDS Centre to double check it is him before sending for the death certificate.
Thanks for you help and sorry again for he mistake. That'll teach me to stop toggling between branches!
