Sharnbrook Look up please - DOUGHTY
« on: Tuesday 21 July 09 14:40 UTC (UK) »

Hello

Please can anyone help with a baptism lookup at Sharnbrook?

The person I am seeking is one William Doughty, born ca 1761 and present in the 1841 census at Sharnbrook, a widower aged 80 born within county of Bedfordshire.

I appreciate there may be many variant spellings of the name Doughty but if there is any entry at Sharnbrook which matches closely I should be most grateful if anyone could pass the details my way.

William married Lucy Paine at Sharnbrook in 1787 and the couple settled to raise their family in the parish although he may have been born in a near parish so if there is no entry at Sharnbrook I can begin to widen my search.

Any help would be much appreciated.  Thank you

Hello Carol,

The earliest Doughty in the Sharnbrook PR is the 1789 baptism of John, first child of William & Lucy.  I have him in my tree born c.1761 based on his age from the 1841 census.

There is no baptism for him around that time at Sharnbrook The transcipt does have a note saying that the register is defective, no entries for April 1761 to April 1762 being recorded. But there were some as from the Bishops Transcripts. A similar note relates to baptisms 1755 - 1756.

As to other parishes in Bedfordshire, there are no entries on the IGI for baptism of William Doughty 10 years either side of 1761. There is one for 1759 in Godmanchester Hunts - who knows ?

William married Lucy Payne on  12th Apr 1787. When Lucy died in 1802 William married Elizabeth Hand on 6th Oct 1805. Lucy Payne's baptism at Thurleigh on 18 Apr 1762 states that she is illegitimate daughter of Mary Gammons, John Pain the reputed father.

Regards John

Hi John

Thank you so much for this.  I had spotted the entry on IGI at Huntingdonshire, so will take steps to look further into it.

Thank you for the added info regarding a second marriage for William after the death of Lucy, I don't suppose you know when William died or was buried?  I don't see him in the 1851 when he would have been about 90, so imagine it would have been shortly after the 1841 census.

I am truly grateful to you for this information, thanks again.

Carol,       According to the NBI, William Doughty was buried at Sharnbrook on 19 Sept 1844 age 83. There is also entry for burial of his wife Elizabeth Doubty age 86 on 8 Aug 1841.  But that was after 1841 census done on June 7th where you say William is a widower, but that status is not shown on the census. In fact the census entry shows Elizabeth age 85 & 35 year old (daughter) Elizabeth.                 regards John

John - how right you are !!!!

I mis-read the age of Elizabeth, his wife, as 35 (not 85) believeing she may have been a daughter and the other Elizabeth aged 35 being a daughter in law.

Thank you so much for clarifying this for me - doesn't it just go to show how easy it is to mis-read the images, especially after a long day in front of the computer!!!

Once again I am most grateful to you, thank you.
Perhaps I may come back to you again if there are any other Sharnbrook entries I need help with?

You have been really helpful John, thank you.
