Hiya If anyone has access to Derby Mercury my ancestor George Statham was killed by a fall of coal at a Ripley mine owned by the Butterley Co. 14/11/1888 i was wondering if it was noted in the paper. Thankyou Jules

Hi
Have you looked on 19C Newspapers, on the Gale?
The Derby Marcury is well represented. I've had some great stuff.
If you are in the UK, you may well be able to get on the site with your librarycard number, from home.
I'll see if I can see it in case you haven't. For anyone with Derby family, it's a great resource.
Best wishes

Hi
I can't see his name, but I'll have another look at an earlier hour for the accident.
Best wishes

Hi
That might explain why I didn't find it. It was a bit late last night when I tried. Worth looking anyway. Our library has also added access to the 17C and 18C section.
Best wishes

Hi
I tried to find you a link, but it's not that simple!
Gale is a huge digitaal archive run by Cengage.
You don't seem to be able to get in easily as an individual, now, but maybe someone else will show you.
However it's free to members of loads of public libraries and educational institutions. I don't know what country you're in, but in the UK you can go to your County library's site and click on the Free Online Resources button, then 19C British Newspapers will take you to the database.
You need a librarycard number to sign in, but even if you don't have one, you can sign up for one online on ours.
I hope this helps.

PS
This is link to one of their main pages and there's loads of information, and free trials but trials are only for institutions.
I hope this helps.

Yes thanks Omskirk i got the information from this site, but it was in the mining accident part and not in the disasters which makes me presume that it was just George that was killed that day,and i wondered if there would be any more info on it.That is why i thought it may b e in local paper and as George worked at Ripley it would most pro be Derby Mercury Thankyou for your help most appreciated Jules

Hi Jules.
I use mine at home.
You have to enter in the password DCC then the 9 digits from your card. No spaces are required.
Mine has R in front of the number you leave this out.
