Bull Ring pub? Need information
« on: Wednesday 22 July 09 01:17 UTC (UK) »

Hi, does anyone know anything about the Bull Ring public house in Birmingham. I recently found out that one of my ancestors married a publican's daughter, Elizabeth Wise around 1891 and was disowned by his family for it.

The pub was under the name Wise, possibly Thomas Ruston Wise.

I'm not sure of the exact name of the pub, but I'm guessing it might be Bull Ring Tavern or something like that.

Hi drhewitt, well the Bull Ring shopping area was only built in the 1960s, and I don't know where they got that name from so it may be just something they called it.
There were quite a few pubs around that area of Birmingham, the oldest one still standing is the Old Crown in Digbeth, but the old Bull Ring area has been redeveloped so much it'd be hard to pin down any of the names now.
If it's any help, it probably would have come under the placename of Digbeth, and Birmingham Central library may have some old photos of the area, either on their records or in newspaper photos. May be worth giving them a call  Smiley

Hi drhewitt, the Bull Ring (so called from when Bull Baiting was a sport) has been a Market Place for hundreds of years, Birmingham was only a Village until the late 1700's, the Town grew up around the Bull Ring.  I have a picture of it taken in 1840, it shows St Thomas, a lot of shops and what would have been Taverns. There is plenty of information either in Books or on the Internet on the History of Birmingham, as for the Tavern, you could find that from a copy of the Post Office Directory, that is probably on line, or at Birmingham Archives.  HTH from Linell.

If you go to www.old-maps.co.uk you can find an old OS map of Birmingham, including the Bull Ring, in 1893. It may give you an idea of what it was like there, at the time.
