It's not what things cost, it's what they're worth

Hi Everyone, Over an enjoyable pint of beer last night in a pub in a village near where I live, I got into conversation with the landlord about his family history. He was rather sketchy with some of the details, but said that his BIRCH family had lived for several generations in the Bulwell area of Nottingham, and that when his father Wilfred was only about 3 years old in 1932 or 1933 his own father had died suddenly and possibly "other members of his family". Now, I've identified one possible BIRCH family in the area in the 1901 Census who seem to have been involved in coal mining. Is there someone with local knowledge of the area who could tell me where to look for details of mines in the area, and indeed if there were any tragic accidents in them at about this time... Very best wishes, keith

Hi Keith
I also had a family in Bulwell around the same time family called Gaskell. He worked & died sadly in 1940 in Bestwood Pit.( Local to Bulwell). The pit bus picked up the local miners in the market square at Bulwell so it might be that this is the place to look first.
Kind regards Judi

Thanks very much for that, Judi... The history of coalmining is something I'm afraid I know next to nothing about, having discovered no ancestors of mine (whoops! totally unintentional pun) who were employed in the industry. Ag labs from Notts, but no miners... Regards, keith

Have you looked at www.cmhrc.co.uk ? It has a database of mining accidents and disasters but I'm not sure what years it covers.

Hi Keith
I agree with garibaldired that the site www.cmhrc.co.uk is excellent. Nottinghamshire was a major county for mining with lots of pits until the conflict of the miners strike/Arthur Scargill/Margaret Thatcher in the early 1980s. A lot of the pits closed but previously there were several around Bulwell.
The 1930s research as it is relatively recent may involve contacting Nottm Archives for records or the Central Library in Nottingham for the newspaper archives. There are also
National Union Of Mineworkers (01623) 559444 - 58 Station Road C O S A Region 4, Sutton In Ashfield, NG17 5GA
National Union Of Mineworkers Nottingham Area (01623) 649741 - 42 St John Street, Mansfield, NG18 1QJ
Union Of Democratic Mineworkers (01623) 626094 - Berry Hill Lane, The Miners Offices, Mansfield, NG18 4JU
I don't know if they can help.
Be aware that it was the formation of the UDM that contibuted to the trouble in Nottinghamshire as previous to the miners strike in the early 80s everyone was in the NUM. The rift is still there. It will still be a sensitive area.
Another site for information on the strike and Notts pits is: http://www.minersadvice.co.uk/nottingham.htm
I hope you find what you are looking for.
Jane

Hi again, Jane! Thanks so much for all those helpful suggestions... And the Framework Knitters thread for this part of the world is still thriving, glad to say, one of the more fascinating threads on Rootschat... Very best wishes, keith

Cinderhill, Radford, Hucknall 1 and 2, were only a short tram, train or bus ride away from Bulwell.
