Marriage details of James HOLBOURN and Mary
« on: Wednesday 22 July 09 18:22 UTC (UK) »

Please can someone help me find the marriage details of James Holbourn to Mary as I would very much like to find out Marys maiden name to go back a further generation.

All I know is that James was born in 1760 in Barnet and died in 1825.
His wife Mary was born in 1762 and died in 182& in Chipping Barnet.

Their first child was also born in Chipping Barnet in 1785.

Any assistance would be very much appreciated.

Kind regards

Hi Tigsy

A quick search of the online Herts Marriage index 1538 - 1837 does not reveal a marriage for James. I'm afraid that this rather suggests that the marriage did not take place in Hertfordshire.

You have actually asked for this lookup before.

I think that you will need to search for the marriage elsewhere.  Bordering counties/London etc. Did you send for the settlement examination that Lady Di found? This might give you a clue about where to start.

Thank you, yes the Settlement Examination has now been ordered.

Its so frustrating as James was born in Chipping Barnet and both he and Mary died in Chipping Barnet.  Marriage details have to be somewhere - its just finding where.  There are no other alternatives on the IGI index.  I have tried all sorts of spellings for Holbourne as well.

Kind regards

I have just received the settlement document and its not very illuminating.  It is not dated but appears to be late 1784 or early 1785 judging by the documents either side.  It says something like:

James Holborn makes the mark that he was born in the Parish of Chipping Barnet in the said Liberty where his father was popided (think this means owned) of Estates to the amount of about eighteen pounds a year which said estates he this depot popided in his own right until about three quarters of a year since - when he sold two tenements in woods tied to Thomas Cox and mortgaged the other in the occupation of Jas Armah Garth to William Morris.  That about four or five years time.............he worked in the capacity of a journeyman butcher with Richard Elind.............document then stops abruptly.

So, as I said, not much help in tracing James' and Mary's marriage.  Does suggest that his father, William, died pre this document if James owned the properties in his own right though.

Best Regards,

Brett
