This is an old brickwall so I am trying it in this category in the hope someone can help please. My g.grandmother was Victorine Louisa SCHOLEFIELD b. 1851 Stockport Cheshire. I have it from three separate family sources that her family was French, and it would seem so from her name, but her parents were Richard SCHOLEFIELD and Elizabeth SMITH. I bought their marriage certificate - 3June 1849 St Nicholas, deptford- and found that Elizabeth's father was named James SMITH and was an Iron Founder. There is a possibi;ity that his wife was named Harriet, but there the trail goes cold. The only other thing of significance is that my great aunt always told me the French name was MARCHANT. I have never known her wrong in any of the other family history so really feel this is a strong lead, even though I cant tie MARCHANT in with SMITH ! Thankyou, Pauline

As sure as I can be thanks Augustine. My g.aunt got everything else right when she wrote out the outline of our family history, including a place here in Australia called Corunna that we looked for in vain for years, and began to think she had meant Cronulla. Sure enough, last year we found Corunna, and the "lost" relatives who had come out here from England. But I'm open to all suggestions, and yours is worth investigating, so thank you very much. I'll keep you informed! Regards, Pauline

I have just received a marriage certificate showing that one of my grandfathers sisters married a William MARCHANT, which leads me to believe my Aunt may have been mistaken in attaching the Marchant name to my G.Grandmother. So my apologies to everyone who tried to help I will now complete this thread and move to the london board for more help! Thankyou all, Pauline
