Deecam - Thanks for the Irish census, only wish we could get the UK 1911 census freely,I wonder who transcribed the Irish one.

Lizzie
I see deccam already posted some info on this...

The Irish census is being digitized by the National Archives of Ireland in partnership with Library and Archives Canada. Both the 1901 and 1911 returns are in the processes of being scanned and placed online for free access.

Last series was such a disappointment, but with series 7, so far so good.

Hazel

Strange that.......the Kevin Whately and Fiona Bruce episodes are up there as two of my all time favourites.

As regards this episode, I'm another who liked it, as SpiderMonkey said "I think this episode was one that the vast majority of people could relate to - the poverty, illnesses and participation in WW1 are things that are repeated in many people's trees." It was an episode that would appeal to all of us who's ancestry is encapsulated in the British Isles and who's ancestors were embroiled at some stage in poverty and WW1 or WW2.

Well done Chris  Smiley

One of my sons who hasn't shown much interest in family history so far, remarked last night how much he enjoyed this episode.

[I think you'd do a great job.  How do you manage to persuade the Register Offices to hand over the certs so quickly and to see the indexes, your researchers must be charmers]!

That's a question I would like answering! Two months ago I went to Lincolnshire Archives researching my wife's tree in the hope of discovering the father(s) of the children born to two sisters at Raithby by Spilsby in 1855. They did not have the Bastardy records there and I asked where the Lincoln Records Office was to see if I could get hold of the birth certs. I was informed that Lincoln does not have a walk-in facility and certs can only be ordered online. Here I am, two months later, still waiting for one of them.

So F & F - how do you do it?

I saw an advertisement in my local Southport Free paper asking for a family history researcher who has the time to go and collect daily certs from the GRO Southport, for a firm of Heir Hunters, can't remember the name but from the South of England ,so how can they do this when the GRO refused to let me collect my own ordered certs as I live only a few miles away, and I was told sorry we are not open to the public for collection.

Can anyone tell me the answer to this, how can they open for a representative of a company of Heir Hunters but not for the public.

Hybridjeff - I was told there was a 14 week wait for Bastardy Certs when I ordered one from Lincs Archives last year.  I was on holiday when it arrived, but I think it probaby was about 12-14 weeks after I ordered it.  I wouldn't order a normal cert from Lincs. I'd always get them from GRO.  I ordered one from GRO last Monday and it arrived Friday.

By the way I understand other record offices are pretty quick, I know Cheshire is always very prompt when sending out wills - about 4 days.

You have found one of the horrid thing when trying to trace your family tree, when you find some thing you want it yesterday just to see what it may tell you, addictive isn't it.
RO are all different they are run by the local councils and rely on local funds, that means that although they all have to provide a service and charge the same for a cert, the local / county council try to make it more profitable even though they all should follow "The Registration of Births, Deaths, Marriages (Fees) Order" I think the last one is from the mid 90's that says the max a cert costs. Some have combined there RO's in to central call centres the first being Kent, then Leicestershire and others followed. The central offices are by far the worst to get certs form. (excluding Kent) several are now trying to charge more for a priority service that I hate but don't want to rock the boat as most the time I need the cert and if we were to complain then we would get noting.
I have not heard of a 12-14 week delay since I went to Liverpool several years ago they are now much better only 2-3 weeks.
F&F have a good relationship with several RO's we visit them often and treat them a lot better than other firms who think by threatening to sue the they will get better service. We have a few ex registrars working for us and really know what we are doing so some don't mind us going in we also book in advance for a general search (£18 by law) I also send out a calender to every RO you may have seen it hanging on some of their walls to make sure they know who we are.

they are a law unto themselves and if you treat them nice and catch them on a good day then you can get what you want.

WDYTYA do all the research in advanced and only tell the celeb while it is being filmed so they would have already had the cert in Mr Moyles case, I have seen them pick up cert from a RO with the code / cert number showing that it was ordered in the FRC in the past, just happened to be pulled out from behind the RO counter! this doesn't happen on Heir Hunters, however the cert you see on screen is  filmed a long time after the research is finished, most the time we will be working just from the index or certs we pick up locally.

The GRO in Southport allow account holders to have a collect service form Southport this is what most the firms use, but you must be registered and have an account, remember we order  over £100k's of certs every year from Southport, and I can reasure you we pay full price for them all.

Thanks for the reply F&F about the GRO Southport I can understand now why you get the priority.

let me put it this way
  • Gertrude was doing this work for a firm of solicitors before she formed her own firm.
  • Gertrude was the senior partner

as I am sure you all know to set up a firm in 1923 it could not be named after a female with a German sounding  surname.

Make your own mind up

follow "HeirHunter" on twitter as we start to film the 4 series

Or a Latvian one either!I take it Mr. Hooper was one of the other partners then?

Sorry to ask so many questions, but HH has got me very interested.
