Bolingbroke photo query
« on: Friday 24 July 09 06:09 UTC (UK) »

I'm guessing my search might centre on Lincolnshire - but it is rather vague.

Trying to establish the locale of a photo taken circa 1938 - a group of 18 at entrance to ? white stone entrance with porthole window.   A leadlight window above door says BOLINGBROKE Phone 51109.  My guess is an hotel but I've failed to find it.

I can place an Australian relative in the group and am wondering if the others might include
family who were hoteliers (but most were around Barnsley/Sheffield).

Any suggestions appreciated.  Thanks you Heather

I would have thought that a place with a 5-digit phone number would have to be in a large city.

For example, in Lincoln in the 1933 directory, all numbers seem to be less than 1500 and in Boston, less than 500.

Remember that Bolingbroke is/was a famous family http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_St_John,_1st_Viscount_Bolingbroke

and have several pubs, hotels etc bearing their name.

Looking at the Sheffield 1933 phone book, numbers in the 51xxx series were in the area of Sheffield called Sharrow.  I'm afaid there is no Bolingbroke Hotel listed in that directory, but it still seems a reasonable bet to me.

Hi Geoff,  Many thanks for your comments.  I can see I have numerous options to pursue, not least a different county. I'll try and access directories for 1930s.  Best wishes,  Heather (Tasmania)
