Thomas NIXON (died around 1965)
« on: Friday 24 July 09 12:38 UTC (UK) »

I'm really struggling to find any information on my paternal grandad's side of the family.

This is all the information that I know.

My grandad: Arthur Nixon born 1930 died 1983
His father: Tom Nixon (presume Thomas), died around 1965.
His mother: Annie Timmis (1893 - 1982) (possibly Horne as she married Joseph Horne in 1911 but he died 1918 presumably in the war.).

Tom & Annie married 1927

I can't find anything else about the Nixon's. I can't find Tom's birthdate nor who his parents were. My grandparents died 4 years before I was born so I don't have them to ask for information and my mum doesn't know who Tom's parents were.

Is there anybody who is able to help me find any more information please? I've search FreeCen, FreeBMD and FreeReg but there is nothing!

Thanks...

There are these births for Thomas Nixon in and around Stoke On Trent, from Staffs BMD.  You need to at least no where Thomas lived to pick out the correct Birth or more of an extact age.  Do you have Tom and Annie's Marriage Certificate, that will give you some details as to where to start searching?  HTH from Linell.

Hi, thanks for that link. I believe I have found Tom's birth year (1892).

No, I don't have any marriage certificates.

Hiya

You at least need to order the marriage certificate to confirm things properly. It will (hopefully) give you the couples ages and their fathers names and professions

The reference is Dec quarter 1927 Stoke on Trent 6b 364 and you can order it here http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

The online Staffordshire BMD indexes are really good http://www.bmsgh.org/staffsbmd/index.html

Do you live local to the area ie. the church is given for the marriage of Tom NIXON to Annie - perhaps you could look the original register up?  Did the family actually live in Smallthorne?

Also, if you know where they lived electoral registers can be used to see when someone disappears from the register perhaps signifying a death.

Do you know when/where Tom NIXON was buried?  Burial registers can be used to establish an age at death which can then be cross referenced with the GRO index. Perhaps there was an obituary in the local newspaper which might give more info.

Hi,
Yeah I've searched the Staffordshire BMD but they don't give the parents names. I have found two possible sets of parents, btu it's knowing which is the correct set! There are Jabez (1853) and Harriet (1852) who's son Thomas ws born in 1892 and there there are Charles (1874) and Polly (1873) who's son Tom was born in 1892. I'm thinking the second are more likely due to firstly them being younger than the first set but also I'm thinking my Tom didn't have the full name Thomas. The birth and marriage info I've found all say Tom not Thomas.

I believe the family lived in Burslem or Tunstall rather than Smallthorne.

The only Nixons that I know of still alive today are myself, my brother and my mum so there is nobody to ask which is a shame.

I used to live just down the road from Smallthorne but now live in Gloucestershire so I can't.

I don't know where he was buried either  Undecided

I can't afford to pay out for marriage certificates as I'm currently unemployed and I started researching as a hobby whilst I wait for a job to come along.

http://smallthorne.com/registers.aspx

The biggest hurdle is knowing the church and you have that so it might be worthwhile asking on the Staffordshire Lookup Request board here on Rootschat http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/board,259.0.html specifically if anybody is going to the Staffordshire Record Office http://www.staffordshire.gov.uk/leisure/archives/sro/ who would be so kind as to look in the 1927 register for you.

If you have some idea where either Tom and Annie (or both of them) were living when they died then you could try and find out which cemeteries are in the area.  I don't know much about Staffordshire (never been there and am not that familiar with the area although I do have ancestry there) but some local councils will look up their burial records for free.

http://www.stoke.gov.uk/ccm/content/hcp/carmountside/cemeteries/burslem-cemetery.en

Yes, more & more of us are on a limited budget these days so it is more difficult but not always impossible.

Good luck

It might be worth e-mailing the local archive office and asking them if they would do a look up for you as we know the year of marriage and asking if they would just confirm if his father was Charles or Jabez. Some of they can be really helpful
