Prisoner in Devizes 1901 - help!
« on: Friday 24 July 09 15:49 UTC (UK) »

Hi

I am currently researching an individual who on the 1901 census is listed as an inmate in Devizes prison.

In the 1881 census he is listed as Henry George Cannings of Potterne, b c1879. In the 1891 census he is shown as Harry Cannings of Potterne b c1878 and in 1901 in Devizes prison as Harry Cannings b c1880.

I have been to the history centre in Chippenham and have looked through the quarterly sessions calender of prisoners from 1891 - 1903 (I believe most prisoners would have only served a couple of years at that prison) but cannot find any mention of him, I might have missed the entry but had a look through several times.

I also had a look in the rough justice folders of summary convictions and whilst I found two entries for a Cannings, neither was Harry.

Would be grateful if anyone has any pointers as to where to go from here?
