Morpeth - Durham or Northumberland
« on: Saturday 25 July 09 04:28 UTC (UK) »

This is probably a silly question, is Morpeth in Durham the same as Morpeth in Northumberland.  I m a little confused as I always thought my ancestors came from Northumberland however I have found records indicating they may have come from Durham.

Any help is much appreciated

regards

Hi Lynne

As far as I'm aware Morpeth is in Northumberland, however there are places that are only about 14 miles from Morpeth which are classed as Durham, so this could explain your problem.

The town of Morpeth is in Northumberland, and always has been. There is no Morpeth in County Durham.

However, until about 1844 some parts of what is now Northumberland were actually parts of County Durham! This is where the confusion arises.

They formed small 'islands' of County Durham within Northumberland.

They were called 'Islandshire' (around Tweedmouth), 'Norhamshire' (around Norham) and 'Bedlingtonshire' (Bedlington area).

The latter, Bedlingtonshire, was within what is now the Morpeth Registration District. Anyone born there would have been registered as being born in County Durham. Also, for the purposes of the 1841 census they would have been considered as living within County Durham.

These three areas became part of Northumberland under the 'Counties (Detached Parts) Bill' of 1844.

Once you know this it clears up a lot of seeming confusions in the 1841 census.

For instance, someone born in, say, Morpeth but living in Bedlingtonshire in 1841 should be classified as 'not born in county' - i.e. not born in County Durham! The reverse would also be true - someone born in Bedlingtonshire but living in Morpeth would be classed as not born in Northumberland!.

Discussed here:

and

and on many other threads.  I'm wondering whether there could be a sticky or something on both boards about it.
