Harry family
« on: Saturday 25 July 09 04:38 UTC (UK) »

I have been looking for info on John and Elizabeth Harry and two of their kids Charles and Thomas.  I found them in the 1861 1841 and 1871 census, but they were listed as grand-children in 1861. My Great grand-father Charles Harry and his brother Thomas left and came to America in 1883. They listed the parents as John and Elizabeth (Thomas). The census in 1861 tells john is 61 and Elizabeth as 57. I think that is too old. The 1871 census has them listed as Harrey. The 1881 census has them both living alone....

Thomas Harry was born in 1861 and Charles was born in 1863...

I have read they were from Herefordshire, Bridstow on Buckcastle hill..

I would love to find or solve this puzzle and find more...

I think that this could be a case of these children being the children of an unmarried daughter and being brought up by their Grandparents.
Often the case where they are listed as grandchildren on the Census [ as the enumerator was local andwould the correct situation ! ]  and what the children were told is different and entered on later Marriage Certificates and other documents.
There are births which fit for a Charles Harry in Bridstow in 1862, and a Thomas in 1861.  And the Hugh Wallis Index for Bridstow shows the Mother as Emma Harry with no father and Elisabeth as Mother of Thomas. Is there an Emma or an Elisabeth on the 1841 Census who would fit ?
Hugh Wallis also shows the birth of  a number of children to John and Elizabeth, and indeed there are births for Emma and Elizabeth. Also other children to unmarried Harry women.

The Birth Certificates from the Ross on Wye Register Office would confirm this theory.

Thanks for the thought, I agree, I see an Elizabeth Harry In the 1851 census living on the same street as a servant in a different house.  she was 17 years old. I think she or Emma could be the father. I know they were poor.  When Charles and Thomas came to Kansas, they were very wealthy land owners and farmers raising hogs and  Hereford cow. I thought that was neat, being from Hereford.

There is a Emma harry and she was the daughter of John and Elizabeth.. There seems to be a lot of Grandchildren...with no fathers..  I have to admire the parents....

I do not have access to the  Birth Certificates from the Ross on Wye Register Office would confirm this theory. Is there a way to do this online.

BMD certificates can't be viewed online, you can only find the information by purchasing the certificate.

Search Freebmd http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl  for the birth, make note of the year, quarter, volume and page, needed to order from the GRO at £7 per certificate http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/.

If ordering directly from the Ross On Wye Register Office, by snail mail only, the information found on Freebmd doesn't apply.

I think that most register Offices can take online payments now too.

The usefulness of asking the local Office is so you can ask them to look for other siblings in their regsiters. Herefordshire has an excellent Index facility available for this type of thing.

Hi tharry,
I have been checking my lists of Harry's and I don't seem to see those two mentioned maybe it is another branch of the Harry line. It goes all the way back to France, around the area of Caen, Normandy. Around the time of William the Conqueror in 1066. Then it had the French version of Harry, which was Henri.
sorry I can't help you but do keep in touch never no we maybe related somewhere along the track.
Are you living in the USA? I am living in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.
