I stumbled across this correspondence via Google. I'm not sure how this site works but if you want any further info I might be able to help. John William (Jim) Drynan was my father. I am Michael Dennis Drynan born Middlesbrough 1944 the third of his four sons.

Hi Michael
Thanks for the note, I have been in touch with John Peter and Anna in Bognor Regis.
Your father John was my mother's cousin and your grandmother Mary Elizabeth Stewart, my great aunt.
The reason I was looking for info on John was that I was completing a Stewart family tree and the Drydens became a side branch, I met your father on a number of occasions when I was a boy in Middlesbrough,
I have sent a number of pics of John to Anna.
If you email me (look at my profile) I will give further details on the maternal side of John's family.

Thanks. My wife has an uncle who has done a lot of research into this already so I know quite a bit of the background but I (and he) would be interested to cross-check. I will contact Anna for the photos.

Incidently, I am sceptical about  the suggestion that the family was ever called DRYDEN, except by mistake. My name is consantly being corrupted  and Dryden, Dryman are the most common errors. As I understand it, DRYDEN is an old english name so unlikely to have been that of an Irish Catholic immigrant in the 19th century. The common spelling in Ireland is DRINAN (you probably know that already) or DRENNAN, whereas most DRYNANs  are  mainly of Scottish origin. My money is therfore firmly on DRINAN as the correct origin, but at my age, I'm sticking to DRYNAN.

Michael
Thanks for the info, Anna has my email address and phone number, if you wish you can send me your email through that route or phone me , I have sent a copy of your grandfathers' army record for WW1 as well as a pic of your grandmother with your father as a baby to Anna.
The first David Drynan who arrived in Middlesbrough was born c1854 in Ireland though I don't know what area.

Anyhow I am prepared to send you what information I have ,and I would  appreciate it if you could glean any info from the work your wifes' uncle has done, in particular the siblings of Mary Elizabeth Stewart, I am interested in John  Stewart  and Susan Stewart who left Middlesbrouigh for Glasgow around 1900-5.

Thanks

I'd just like to say how lovely I think it is that you have made a connection thro this wonderful media !

There was a time when the instigators of this site would have acknowledged that, but I fear it is long gone, but nice that they set up the site so we can communicate.

Well done and happy meeting !
