A dodgy past in Dundalk?
« on: Saturday 25 July 09 16:33 UTC (UK) »

I have just found this wonderful site and wondered whether anyone can help me

I'm trying to track my father's family, who are from Dundalk.  I know that my grandfather was Joseph Carroll (1907-1977) and was one of 13 children.  His parents were Matthew Carroll (who was the oldest of 10) and Catherine O'Hanlon.  Matthews parents were Ellen McDonald and John Carroll

I understand that a lot of the family moved to America, but, for some unknown reason, my grandfather returned rather abruptly to England and this seems to be something of a family 'skeleton' - I'm really keen to find out what happened.

There is also some talk that the family house was burnt down in Dundalk.

Any information gratefully accepted, or ideas on where I can access some more information too

Thanks

Welcome to Rootschat.
IGI (www.familysearch.org) shows several children of a John Carroll and Ellen McDonald born in Co. Louth:
Rose born 21 Nov.1864
Peter born 2 Feb.1867 Carlingford
Francis born 28 Mar.1869
John born 24 Mar.1871
Patrick born 24 Mar.1871
Ellen born 4 Mar.1873 Dundalk
Thomas born 29 Dec.1875 Beragh

There's also a Catharine born 30 July 1877 Brookline, Norfolk, Mass. but this may be another family.

Was your grandfather Joseph Carroll born in Co. Louth? The 1911 census will be coming online (free) sometime (hopefully) soon and might provide more details of the family.

Thankyou very much for that information - it ties in with some of the names I already know, so it looks like the right family..... and for IGI and census information, that will certainly help me on my way

Thanks again
