On the marriage index you show below- the wife's name is Amelia H Quick- not Elizabeth?
Have you found her in 1911- even by just trying the indexes. Do you know her DOB?
Maybe William wasn't far away- they only married two years later.

Sorry - yes, her name is Amelia Elizabeth Quick. For some reason I though Elizabeth originally, but Amelia is correct.
Amelia was born in Q3 1894, in Plymouth. I don't think I have found her in 1911, no. I'll have to check what I have at home - I think I may have her in 1901 with her parents.

Actually I think I do have her in 1911 - indexed as "Minnie Quick". Other members of the household are possibly "J R Quick" and "S Quick". "J R" and "S" are tantilisingly close to the names of the witnesses - not close enough though I don't think!

From the general searches on the 1911 census, there is a William Nixon, 24, showing in Farnham, Surrey with the key words, 4th Middlesex. A possibility?

Perhaps NIXON was just a name that he used to join the army, for some reason.
Maybe he had been turned down as Bates, or allocated to some other duties?

I won't leave names here, in case they are still living, but there is a Nixon (Quick) child born Plymouth in 1914 and two Bates (Quick) children in the 1920s.
So the change of name back to Bates may co-incide with discharge from the army.

Interesting. One of them is still alive yes, unfortunately her memory's going a bit! I'm /fairly/ sure the nixon child isn't relevant, or at least is someone she has no idea of (she named the others). I'll investigate though - thanks!

Actually - I think we've got it!
Jessie Nixon (born Q4 1914, since died), appears to have been indexed under the name Bates *and* Nixon.
Changing his name to back to bates after the army appears to be a very good explanation then. Also the living Bates does remember the fact that Jessie existed.

Maybe a look at that possible 1911 census entry at the barracks in Farnham will give a place of birth for William to let you start focusing your research on him in a specific area

It does look very promising....especially as I've bought the 1911 record now and his birth place is Toddington on there too.
There are no William Nixon births in that area that fit the birth date, but there's one William Bates that fits the correct area (Woburn).
So it seems he was born a Bates, used Nixon perhaps in the Army, had a child (registered under Bates and Nixon), then came out of the army, went back to Bates and had 2 more children.
I'll look at the 1901 record now.

There's an 1891 entry for a William Bates b. Toddington c. 1883, parents Charles and Naomi (she has been entered first above Charles' entry RG12; Piece: 1263; Folio 15; Page 6
Not sure whether this entry fits in with the confusion over surnames
