If you turn the IGI marriage search the other way round and put Ruth Bonner's name first and then spouse Henry Bates gives you:

Ruth Bonner - father Aaron

This then gives you this entry for Ruth in 1851: HO107; Piece: 1755; Folio: 352

If you search on Ancestry Trees for parents Aaron Bonner and wife Sarah, you will find a number of family trees for this line  Smiley

Your luck is in Carvell  Wink A number of trees for the William Bates and Phoebe (Spires) line also on Ancestry. Leave mother's first name off on the search and just use Spires for the surname as there are varying spellings of her first name.

Thanks!

I've been through everything and that's all good info!

For the record, Henry Bates' first marriage was with Sarah Garner and she died in 1851.  Slightly oddly, on the 1851 census Henry is already married to Ruth.  Sarah then dies in Q4 1851.

Just when I thought the Bates' bizarreness had ended!

And of the two relevant Sarah Garners in Bedfordshire in 1841 one of them is in Woburn Workhouse (!) and another is living in the same house as a family of Bates'!

Hi Carvell

If you double check the refs that I gave for a possible entry for Henry and Sarah in 1851, I think you will find Sarah still alive and with family. It is the 1861 entry where Ruth, now married to Henry, then shows:

1851:  HO107; Piece: 1755; Folio: 292; Page: 29 with Sarah, and
1861: RG9; Piece: 1004; Folio: 14; Page: 21 with Ruth

Sarah Garner's marriage to Henry Bates shows on IGI as:

HENRY BATES (father William Bates)
SARAH GARNER (father James)
Marriage: 25 JUL 1841 in Toddington, Bedford

Heh ah yes.

I was seeing that I had an 1851 census record assigned to Henry in my software and assumed that was Ruth, but of course it's still Sarah.

As you are inputting details into your family software  Roll Eyes...take some care on Sarah Garner's death date. Not sure if she was the one showing for 1851. There is also another death showing in Woburn RD in 1st Qrt 1856.

The reason that I think she might have died later, in 1856, is on looking at possible IGI christening entries shows to parents Henry Bates and Sarah:

1. THOMAS WILLIAM BATES Christening: 25 DEC 1841 Toddington
2. HENRY BATES Christening: 24 DEC 1843 Toddington
3. JAMES BATES Christening: 06 SEP 1846 Toddington
4. MARY ANN BATES Christening: 01 APR 1849 Toddington
5. THOMAS WILLIAM BATES Christening: 24 AUG 1851 Toddington
6. PHOEBE BATES Christening: 28 MAY 1854 Toddington
7. PHOEBE BATES Christening: 30 DEC 1855 Toddington

I am wondering whether mother Sarah Garner may have died early 1856 following the birth of daughter Phoebe, christened at the end of 1855.

Then Henry remarries to Ruth in 1857.

Indeed - I had originally only searched for deaths up to 1851, but have since searched to 1861 and found that death too.

Thanks for getting the christenings!

What do you think of the entry of 1851, with an Ann Garner showing as 'step mother' in the household of Henry Bates and Sarah? Writing is not great on the image, I am wondering if it says 'wife's mother'.

A bit of guessing here  Wink With Sarah's father showing as James on her marriage entry in 1841 and an Ann Garner showing as living with Sarah in 1851, a couple of bits and pieces:

There is this possible marriage on IGI for Sarah's parents:

JAS GARNER and HANNAH FREESER
Marriage: 05 OCT 1803 in Toddington

Some christenings for them on IGI:

1. REBECCA GARNER Christening: 28 AUG 1814 Toddington
2. JOSEPH GARNERBirth: 28 JUN 1817/ Christening: 21 SEP 1817 Toddington

Apart from the 1841 census entries you found as possibles for Sarah, there is one more. She's indexed as 26 but the original entry looks more like 20. Looking at the whole entry on the original brings up this entry:

James Garner, 60, agri. lab
Ann Garner 66 b. outside the county
Sarah 20 (indexed 26)
Rebecca 28
Thomas 6
Joseph 2

If you search for the Sarah entry (household indexed separately) you will find the family: HO107; Piece 5; Book: 34;Folio: 10; Page: 15;

Monica

Added: Mother Ann Garner, 88, shows as living with daughter Rebecca and her family by 1861 -  RG9; Piece: 1004; Folio: 44; Page: 14

I'm not too convinced!  Looking at the wording I find it hard to get "step mother" out of my head.

I'll have a look...

What you have found does make a lot of sense though.
