Thats great! Thanks so much to you all for the replies. At least it has given some useful mental exercise!!!!!!!!!
I think you are right about Mary Ann not being John Pacey's daughter, or at least not a legitimate daughter. That was one of the explanations I was considering. I have access to all the censuses except 1851 which  "findmypast" don't have fully yet.

Can I move this discussion further concerning this family.
In 1871 & 1881 there is a Sarah A(nn) Tibbs living with John and Ellen Pacey, listed as grand daughter, born around 1864 in either Ripley or Ambergate. There are no parents mentioned and my thoughts were that the elusive Mary Ann might be the mother, but I couldn't find a marriage between a Mary Pacey and someone named Tibbs, and I can't find one for Pickering either.
I have just sent off for Sarah Ann Tibbs birth cert. Her birth was registered in Belper in March 1864.

Many thanks again for some interesting research.

Yes.....sorry Pels my error - it is 1824.....I had corrected it but you must have seen the post prior to my correction  Embarrassed

I am so sorry Dizzifish !!

To be perfectly honest I was so chuffed with what you'd found - I clicked on post, but then wandered away to see what else I could possibly come up with on the IGI !!

You must have altered it while I was doing that, in the meantime all I could see was what you'd initially said !!  Sad

Sorry Eric, I'll post this and read your reply !  Smiley

Added:

Please would you post the outcome of the birth certificate, I for one would be interested to know !!

Hello all,

A little bit more…

Eric...I see from your post you have ordered the birth certificate for Sarah Ann Tibbs and that it is Belper registration district and on FMP the information also gives it as the sub district as Ripley.

Well….. a little bit more digging came up with this marriage =

FreeBMD
Marriages MarQ 1863
WILLIAM TEBB & MARY ANN PICKERING – Belper 7b 538

And FMP also has the marriage details and the sub district is also Ripley and states the marriage took place at All Saints, Ripley, Derbyshire.

As luck has it I have some details of some All Saints marriages at Ripley……  Smiley

Marriage - All Saints, Ripley – 9th March 1863
WILLIAM TEBB, aged 32, Wid, occupation Collier, residence Ripley, father John Tebb, Labourer.
MARY ANN PICKERING, aged 20, spinster, father John Pickering, Collier.
William signed & Mary Ann her mark X
Witnesses = Joseph Tebb & Biddy Tebb

Regards

Sheila.

What a wonderful board this is!!!!
Thank you all so much for all your ferretting. I will post the details from the birth cert. when I get it.

I was surprised freeBMD didn't show the marriage when I put in Tibb(s) and phonetic variations, and Pickering.

I have just probably found why Sarah Ann was living with her grandparents. There is a death of Mary Ann Tebb June Qtr. 1864 registered in Belper district.

Now I have to explain it all to my American cousin!!!!!!!

regards

You are welcome.... Smiley

I see you have posted while I was typing this... Grin

Maybe the reason Sarah Ann Tibbs is with her grandparents is because her mother died?

FreeBMD
Deaths JunQ 1864
TEBB  Mary Ann     Belper  7b 285

It is also on FMP at Ripley and her age is given as 21yrs, but she doesn’t appear to have been buried at Ripley All Saints.

It didn’t take William long to remarry =

Marriage – All Saints, Ripley. – 23rd October 1864
WILLIAM TEBB, age 32yrs, Wid. Collier, residence Ripley, father John Tebb, Labourer
HARRIET SIMPSON, aged 26 yrs, Wid, occupation Green Grocer, father John Hill.
Both signed
Witnesses = Daniel Hill & Mary Jane Crowston.

 The Brentnall/Pickering connection.

1) A Robert Pickering married Mary Bradley in 1805 and they had about 8 children between 1806 and 1822 in Bilborough and later Greasley. Then about 1823 Robert died.

2) A John Brentnall married Susannah Draper in 1805 and they had some 6 or 7 children between 1807 and 1823. Then Susannah died.

3)John Brentnall married Mary Pickering (Bradley) in 1824, and they had 2 more children.

So the 1841 census  comprises John and Mary and children some of his, some of hers and some of theirs!!!!!!

Hello Eric,

I thought I would try and find the Pacy/Pickering marriage to help you sort out the family, although I can see you seem to have it mostly sorted now, although it looks like Robert Pickering married twice; I have thrown a few more in case they help any…… Smiley
I don’t know where any of them were buried but it wasn’t in Greasley.

Kind regards

Sheila.

Hi
I have now received the birth certificate for Sarah Ann Tibbs, which shows our investigations were correct.

b. 17th Dec 1863, Hammersmith Ripley, Sarah Ann, father William Tibbs, mother Mary Ann Tibbs formerly Pickering, father coal miner birth registered by Mary Ann Tibbs on 4th Jan 1864.

The surname is here shown as Tibbs.
I have a photo of the wedding of Elizabeth Willmott, daughter of John Willmott and Sarah Ann Willmott( nee Tibbs).(1908) I presume the couple sitting next to the bride are the above, her mother and father.
I can probably extract a photo of Mary Ann if needed.

Thanks for all the effort which went into this topic.
