Russian Swedish nationality
« on: Sunday 26 July 09 14:19 UTC (UK) »

Hi, how could I find birth records for someone born in St Petersburg about 1850, to Swedish parents. Would they have been registered in Sweden anywhere, or in St Petersburg. Unfortunately we have very little information on this person, my OH's great grandfather who came to England some time before 1891.
His name was Carl Qvarnstrom, though he later changed it to Charles Quarnstrom, and on his marriage certificate his father is listed as Peter Qvarnstrom, a tailor.

Thanks

Hi Linda!

If you ancestor was Swedish speaking, then he would probably have spelt his name "Karl Kvarnström"

Kvarnström means "running water next to a mill" - a watermill. It's the sort of name that lots of swedish  speaking people took in the 1800's when they didn't want to be called "hansson" or "svensson" any more. It means that your ancestor wasn't necessarily related to other people with the name Kvarnström unless you know the parish that he came from.

It may be that he came from sweden. it may also be that he came from the Finnish speaking part of Finland. Finland at that timeincluded the area Karelia which is close to St Petersberg and there were Swedish speaking people who lived in Karelia ( like the poet Edith Södergran).

Also at that time the finnish merchant navy sailed under the russian flag so if he came to England as a sailor for example ( not unusual ) then he would have sailed under thje russian flag even if he was a swedish speaking finn.

Just had a look at the telephone directory. Kvarnström is a common name in Sweden. There are 208 Kvarnströms in Stockholm alone.

But in Finland it is also a common name.

The most famous Kvarnström is the dance choreographer Kenneth Kvarnstöm. He comes from Finland but works in Sweden

And a bit more...

There has been a swedish church in St Petersberg since 1634. It was closed for a long time but is now open again and administrated from Äbo / Turku in Finland. The vicar is called Eero Sepponen and he can be reached at

Eriksgatan 3,
Åbo
Finland

Thank you for your help.  I will try to e-mail the vicar for the church and see if he can help further.
